Staff Backend Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +5 more states.

📋 Description

• Oversee the technical design and execution of intricate, high-impact projects within Fanatics Live.

• Create and enhance scalable architectures for live commerce, discovery, community engagement, and transactional experiences.

• Address challenging engineering issues that span various systems, services, and teams.

• Set the technical vision, establish reusable patterns, and uphold engineering standards.

• Collaborate with Product and Design teams to convert customer and business needs into technical solutions.

• Engage directly in architecture, prototyping, implementation, code reviews, debugging, and tackling complex engineering challenges.

• Recognize and mitigate scalability, reliability, security, performance, and operational risks.

• Balance the pace of delivery, user experience, technical excellence, operational complexity, and platform integrity.

• Enhance observability, testing, deployment safety, performance, and resilience.

• Lead technical responses to major production challenges and drive platform enhancements.

• Guide engineers through design evaluations, code reviews, and provide technical leadership.

• Foster alignment among engineering teams and convey technical decisions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

⛳️ Requirements

• Minimum of 8 years of professional software engineering experience, including the development and operation of production software at scale.

• Extensive knowledge in modern web and software engineering, with substantial experience in frontend, backend, API, distributed systems, or full-stack development.

• Proven experience in architecting and delivering complex systems that involve multiple services, components, or engineering teams.

• Experience leading significant technical projects without formal authority over personnel management.

• Strong grasp of scalable web architectures, APIs, caching, asynchronous processing, cloud infrastructure, performance, and system reliability.

• Capability to navigate ambiguous challenges and devise a clear course of action.

• Excellent architectural judgement with the ability to balance immediate delivery needs with long-term technical sustainability.

• Experience in influencing engineering standards, architecture, or development practices beyond current projects.

• Strong communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical decisions and trade-offs effectively.

• Proven track record of mentoring engineers.

• Nice to have: experience in high-scale consumer marketplaces, e-commerce, live streaming, social/community platforms, payments, auctions, or real-time digital products.

• Nice to have: experience supporting high-profile live events or adapting to rapidly changing traffic patterns.

• Nice to have: experience with real-time communication technologies and event-driven architectures.

• Nice to have: experience in optimizing consumer web applications for performance, reliability, and conversion rates.
