Soil Scientist

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in South Africa.

📋 Description

• Assess and categorize the physical attributes of soil to evaluate its suitability for a diverse range of crops.

• Categorize soil in orchards and/or agricultural fields.

• Utilize QGIS to digitize analyzed soil physical properties.

• Prepare soil classification reports.

• Offer insights and feedback to farmers and clients.

• Create drainage layouts.

• Design orchard layouts.

• Develop irrigation plans based on soil physical characteristics.

• Specify appropriate probe locations based on soil physical attributes.

• Carry out ad hoc tasks or other related duties as assigned.

⛳️ Requirements

• BSc in Agriculture (Agronomy/Horticulture) or a relevant four-year BSc degree in Agriculture/Soil Science or BSc in Geology/Environmental Science.

• BSc Agriculture candidates must have completed Soil Science as a subject at the 3rd-year level.

• Experience in GIS is advantageous.

• Experience with various crops is beneficial.

• Proficient in both Afrikaans and English, spoken and written.

• Must own a pickup truck (bakkie).

• Enjoys outdoor work.

• Comfortable with extended working hours when necessary.

• Enthusiastic about learning and enhancing scientific knowledge.

• Willing to travel extensively, both domestically and internationally.

• Available to work every second Saturday when required.

• Basic understanding of soil classification and soil science.

• Strong communication skills, including the ability to convey technical information effectively.

• Possesses a strong sense of responsibility.

• Capable of working independently as well as collaboratively within a team.

• Excellent attention to detail.

• Able to perform well under pressure.

• Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.

• Capable of critical thinking.

• Computer literate.
