Software Quality Engineering Lead

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Lead and develop UpDoc’s software quality engineering function, encompassing strategy, standards, infrastructure, tools, and processes.

• Take ownership of the risk-based testing strategy for patient- and provider-facing products, backend services, APIs, integrations, and clinical workflows.

• Collaborate with Engineering and Quality/Regulatory teams to convert design controls, software lifecycle requirements, and risk-management activities into verification practices.

• Create traceability between software requirements, risks and controls, verification activities, and objective evidence.

• Design, implement, and sustain automated test frameworks and suites, supplemented by manual and exploratory testing.

• Enhance testability, pinpoint edge cases and failure modes, and establish verification methods before defects are deployed to production or undergo formal verification.

• Analyze complex software failures using code, logs, network requests, databases, and debugging tools.

• Set standards for defect documentation, investigation, prioritization, resolution, and verification.

• Define criteria for release readiness and provide evidence-based evaluations of verification status, outstanding issues, and release risks.

• Incorporate automated testing into CI/CD workflows while upholding regulated software controls and evidence requirements.

• Continuously enhance test environments, test data, tools, metrics, and engineering practices.

• Cultivate a culture of shared quality and reliability responsibilities while contributing to the development and growth of the software quality engineering team.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 7 years of experience in software quality engineering, SDET, test automation, or a comparable engineering-oriented quality role, including senior or technical leadership experience.

• Proven experience in establishing, leading, or significantly scaling software quality engineering practices.

• Background in developing and testing software within a regulated medical device, SaMD, or similarly safety-critical environment.

• Strong understanding of software verification, design controls, risk management, traceability, and objective testing evidence.

• Proficient software engineering skills with hands-on experience in creating automated tests using Python, TypeScript, JavaScript, or another modern programming language.

• Experience in designing and maintaining automated testing frameworks rather than primarily depending on manual testing.

• Extensive experience in testing modern web applications, backend services, REST APIs, integrations, and intricate end-to-end workflows.

• Familiarity with functional, integration, regression, end-to-end, exploratory, and risk-based testing methodologies.

• Experience with browser automation tools such as Playwright, Cypress, Selenium, or similar technologies.

• Experience in integrating automated testing into CI/CD pipelines.

• Proficiency in reading application code and utilizing logs, network requests, databases, and debugging tools for investigating complex failures.

• Strong judgment regarding software and product risk, with the ability to differentiate between safety- or clinically significant issues and lower-impact defects.

• Capability to establish practical processes in a fast-paced environment while maintaining the necessary rigor and independence in software verification.

• Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities across Engineering, Product, Clinical, and Quality/Regulatory teams.

• Comfortable working independently, taking ownership, and remaining actively involved in an early-stage startup environment.

• Highly desired: experience with FDA-regulated medical device software or SaMD, IEC 62304, ISO 14971, clinical workflows, AI/LLM products, mobile/PWA testing, healthcare integrations/EHR/FHIR, performance/reliability/security/load testing, cloud architectures, CI/CD, and mentoring quality engineers.
