Software Engineering Manager

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Define and lead the technical strategy and architecture for Terafab’s manufacturing execution system (Fab).

• Oversee the design and implementation of key features, services, and architectural components within Fab.

• Drive technical choices for construction automation orchestration workflows.

• Design and implement intricate data models, APIs, and scalable system integrations.

• Define and maintain technical interfaces between Fab software and Autonomy, IoT, and Controls/SCADA.

• Lead efforts to reduce technical debt, refactor systems, and modernize architecture.

• Establish coding patterns, best practices, and technical standards.

• Evaluate and integrate technologies that enhance productivity or product capabilities.

• Conduct architecture-focused code reviews.

• Represent engineering in product and cross-functional planning.

• Address complex technical challenges across Fab and hardware-adjacent systems.

• Identify systemic issues, performance bottlenecks, and architectural constraints.

• Lead production investigations, root-cause analyses, and implement long-term solutions.

• Contribute to technical planning, estimation, and risk assessments.

• Act as a technical escalation point for production incidents.

• Manage a small team of software engineers, including performance oversight, career development, and one-on-ones.

• Facilitate scrum processes including sprint planning, backlog grooming, standups, retrospectives, and sprint reviews.

• Coordinate prioritization, delivery, blockers, and dependencies.

• Collaborate with Autonomy, IoT, Controls, and other cross-functional partners.

• Translate product requirements into actionable technical tasks.

• Mentor engineers through code reviews, pairing sessions, and technical guidance.

• Assist with engineering planning, resource estimation, and risk assessments.

• Contribute to hiring, technical candidate evaluations, and onboarding processes.

• Enhance engineering culture, team processes, and cross-functional relationships.


⛳️ Requirements

• 10+ years of professional software engineering experience with a focus on technical leadership across complex systems.

• Recent experience in shipping personally written production code.

• Expert proficiency in Python, Django, and scalable backend services.

• Strong architectural mindset with the ability to design systems that scale in performance, team size, and feature complexity.

• Extensive experience with modern frontend frameworks, particularly Angular, including complex state management and performance optimization.

• In-depth experience with PostgreSQL, query optimization, and PostGIS.

• Proficient in utilizing AI-assisted coding tools such as Claude Code or Cursor, while implementing appropriate guardrails for junior engineers.

• Proven track record in designing and implementing complex data models with intricate relationships and constraints.

• Experience in defining and maintaining technical interfaces between software and hardware-adjacent systems.

• Ability to cultivate the skills of engineers through mentorship, goal-setting, and effective communication.

• Hands-on experience in facilitating agile/scrum processes, including sprint planning, backlog management, and velocity tracking.

• Capability to quickly learn new tools and technologies.

• Ability to thrive in ambiguous and rapidly changing environments.

• Exceptional communication and coordination skills across both technical and non-technical audiences.

• Experience collaborating effectively with distributed and cross-functional teams.

• Previous experience in managing or leading a small engineering team, encompassing people management, performance feedback, and career development (preferred).

• Presence in Davis, CA or the surrounding area for improved collaboration with hardware teams (preferred).

• Experience with workflow orchestration, state machines, event-driven architectures, discrete event simulation, or industrial automation (preferred).

• Familiarity with Modbus, OPC-UA, MQTT, CAN bus, or similar protocols (preferred).

• Experience in real-time monitoring, telemetry, edge computing, or IoT data pipelines (preferred).

• Experience with AWS, CloudFormation, or Terraform (preferred).

• Expertise in construction technology, industrial automation, renewable energy systems, or related fields (preferred).

• Leadership experience in fast-paced startup or scale-up environments (preferred).

• Experience with microservices, distributed systems, performance optimization, scaling, or reliability engineering (preferred).
