Software Engineering Manager

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New Jersey.

📋 Description

• Lead, mentor, and provide support to a team of 5–8 software engineers focused on developing Ruby on Rails services and React frontends.

• Take ownership of team well-being, performance, and immediate outputs.

• Organize and distribute daily tasks and sprint assignments.

• Track progress against delivery timelines and ensure projects stay on course.

• Address challenges, clarify requirements, and facilitate transitions among engineers, teams, and vendors.

• Manage bug triaging and production issues to reduce customer impact.

• Ensure adherence to coding, QA, code review, testing, and documentation standards.

• Provide timely constructive feedback and conduct regular one-on-one meetings.

• Celebrate team achievements and acknowledge individual contributions.

• Oversee onboarding and skill enhancement for new team members.

• Recognize and implement process improvements at the team level.

• Escalate unresolved or significant issues to senior engineering leadership.

• Advocate for the responsible use of AI-assisted development tools in coding, testing, documentation, and debugging.

• Maintain secure, ethical, and robust engineering practices.

• Collaborate with Product, Customer Success, and external vendors to deliver dependable results.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 5 years of professional software development experience.

• At least 2 years of experience managing or formally leading a software engineering team.

• Proficiency with Ruby on Rails, React, AWS, and PostgreSQL.

• Understanding of API management, cloud computing, DevOps practices, and software design principles.

• Technical expertise to facilitate discussions and assess trade-offs.

• Proven history of consistent team delivery, adherence to coding and QA standards, timely task completion, and reliable schedules.

• Strong problem-solving abilities.

• Excellent collaboration and communication skills with engineers, non-technical stakeholders, and external vendors.

• Experience in onboarding and developing engineers.

• Good judgment in determining when to resolve issues locally versus escalating them.

• Flexibility and a dedication to ongoing learning.

• Strong grasp of information and data security fundamentals.

• Ethical, customer-focused decision-making approach.

• Comfortable utilizing AI tools and mentoring a team in coding, testing, documentation, and learning.

• Nice to have: practical experience in Rails, React, or full-stack engineering.

• Nice to have: experience with AWS and Azure production workloads, CI/CD, and automated deployment practices.

• Nice to have: background in working with third-party or vendor teams.

• Nice to have: experience in resilience planning, incident management, or on-call processes.

• Nice to have: familiarity with distributed/service-oriented systems and asynchronous event-driven communication.
