Sign Language Interpreter – Contractor

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Interpret or transliterate academic content to ensure accessibility for D/HH students, facilitating their engagement with instruction, communication within the school community, and participation in school activities.

• Provide interpretation and transliteration of content in real-time, synchronous virtual academic environments in alignment with students’ IEPs.

• Customize language and materials to meet the unique needs of individual students.

• Collaborate with educators, caregivers, related service providers, and other members of the school community to discuss student progress and requirements.

• Ensure that all services comply with the stipulations outlined in IEPs.

• Act as a member of IEP teams and participate in IEP meetings.

• Deliver expressive and voice interpretation of classroom instruction.

• Clarify curricular content and assist in the completion of assignments.

• Offer language support during small group sessions and one-on-one interactions.

• Provide interpretation for extracurricular activities, school events outside the virtual classroom, and meetings with caregivers.

• Adhere to the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Code of Ethics.

• Serve as a liaison among D/HH students, hearing peers, staff, community members, and caregivers.

• Foster and maintain positive relationships with students, caregivers, and school staff.

• Be available during designated work hours.

• Support students across various schools and potentially acquire licensure in multiple states.

⛳️ Requirements

• At least 1 year of experience interpreting in an educational setting.

• A minimum of 1 year of experience providing interpreting services in a virtual format.

• Proficient in one or more signing systems in an educational context, such as American Sign Language (ASL), Manually Coded English, Conceptually Accurate Signed English (CASE), and/or Finger Spelling.

• Possess National Interpreter Certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and/or state-specific educational interpreter licensure.

• Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL).

• Capability to work independently and be available for at least 20 hours per week during standard school hours.

• Ability to maintain a professional home office free from distractions during work hours.

• Strong knowledge of content and subject matter.

• Aptitude for supporting and guiding both adults and students.

• Willingness to receive regular coaching.

• Flexibility to adapt and embrace change to achieve outstanding student outcomes.

• Capacity to design and deliver staff development sessions.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Strong organizational and time management abilities.

• Willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies and educational platforms.

• Proficiency in MS365.

• Ability to pass the required background check.

• Must be self-motivated, reliable, creative, and passionate about addressing student needs.
