This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Arizona, +5 more states.
• Assess applications that have significant financial implications and complexity.
• Analyze underwriting decisions while adhering to overall underwriting policies.
• Identify and offer solutions to workflow and systems challenges.
• Negotiate and manage time and resources to adhere to deadlines and service requirements.
• Provide training and serve as an information resource for junior underwriters.
• Conduct audits, formal appeal reviews, and reviews of contestable claims.
• Review applications for compliance with established underwriting guidelines and policies.
• Review medical record summaries to ensure guideline adherence.
• Support management with research initiatives related to risk assessment.
• Process formal underwriting appeals and address complaints.
• Evaluate underwriting fraud referrals and assist with portfolio reviews.
• Examine contestable claims for potential misrepresentation during underwriting.
• Oversee the underwriting process for the most intricate cases.
• Act as a subject matter expert for junior staff and management.
• Assist management with training staff and providing consultations.
• Foster relationships within a self-directed team setting.
• Present a professional image and serve as a role model for junior personnel.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent business experience.
• Ideally, 7 or more years of underwriting experience or exposure.
• In-depth understanding of the underwriting function.
• Solid knowledge of John Hancock's diverse business operations.
• Strong familiarity with referral areas.
• Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Strong analytical abilities; capable of defining, researching, and resolving issues.
• Exceptional skill in creating and maintaining customer relationships.
• Ability to prioritize tasks and work efficiently under deadlines while balancing service times with customer needs.
• Strong capability to comprehend, retain, and apply current technical information to daily operational challenges.
• Thorough knowledge of company plans, riders, benefits, and illustrations.
• Extensive understanding of medical science, technology, and terminology and their effects on morbidity.
• Ability to work independently and mentor junior colleagues.
