This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Maryland.
• Underwrite new and renewal Commercial Casualty accounts independently, with a focus on Commercial Auto, Commercial General Liability, and Excess Liability.
• Assess large and intricate risks by analyzing operations, exposures, loss history, financial data, risk management practices, coverage needs, and proposed program structures.
• Formulate underwriting recommendations regarding risk selection, pricing, coverage terms, limits, deductibles or retentions, captive participation, attachment points, exclusions, and various coverage conditions.
• Review and interpret policies for Commercial Auto, Commercial General Liability, and Excess Liability, including ISO, non-ISO, proprietary, and manuscript forms and endorsements.
• Analyze the interplay of policy definitions, exclusions, conditions, limits, aggregates, defense provisions, underlying insurance requirements, and endorsements across policy layers.
• Identify coverage gaps, inconsistencies, unintentional coverage grants, and conflicts among quoted terms, underlying policies, excess coverage, and issued documents.
• Utilize knowledge of admitted, non-admitted, and surplus lines insurance markets along with their related requirements.
• Enhance and sustain knowledge of trucking and transportation operations, including fleet management, vehicle ownership and leasing, driver management, commodities, operating radius, filings, safety performance, and industry trends.
• Review motor-carrier details and transportation risk indicators, such as vehicle and driver schedules, operating authority, inspection and violation history, crash data, safety metrics, loss trends, and risk-control practices.
• Scrutinize loss runs and claims data for frequency, severity, development, open claims, litigation trends, and patterns influencing underwriting decisions.
• A Bachelor’s degree and at least seven years of progressively responsible Commercial Property and Casualty underwriting experience; an equivalent combination of education and pertinent industry experience may be acceptable.
• Extensive underwriting experience with Commercial Auto, Commercial General Liability, and Excess Liability coverages, including the assessment of complex casualty risks.
• Strong technical expertise in commercial insurance coverage forms, policy construction, and coverage mechanics, including ISO forms and endorsements, non-ISO forms, and manuscript endorsements.
• Proven experience in analyzing exposure information, loss runs, claims history, pricing factors, and other underwriting data.
• Familiarity with admitted, non-admitted, and surplus lines markets and their associated placement requirements.
• Experience in evaluating policy terms, limits, deductibles or retentions, attachment points, exclusions, underlying insurance, defense provisions, and other significant coverage conditions.
• Capacity to independently manage complex accounts, exercise sound underwriting judgment, and document and communicate underwriting recommendations effectively.
• Excellent written, verbal, analytical, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel, including the capability to organize and analyze large and complex data sets.
• Property and Casualty insurance license and/or CPCU, AU, ARM, or CIC designation is preferred.
• Underwriting experience in the trucking and transportation sector is preferred.
• Experience in underwriting captive insurance programs or other alternative-risk structures is preferred.
• Collaboration with actuaries to assess loss development, actuarial assumptions, projected losses, and account-specific loss selections is preferred.
• Underwriting experience with accounts involving multiple coverage lines, insurance layers, entities, jurisdictions, or intricate program structures is preferred.
