This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Act as a key technical member of the Mission Innovation team, developing, analyzing, showcasing, and experimenting with new EO/IR payload concepts and associated technologies.
• Establish system and payload requirements, create advanced simulations and models, and conduct thorough technical analysis for preliminary payload concepts and applications.
• Discover and facilitate innovative imaging modes and new operational applications.
• Lead and assist in early-stage R&D initiatives and proposals as the Principal Investigator.
• Collaborate with Product and Applied Science teams to transform initial ideas into viable technical frameworks and demonstrations.
• Assess technical trade-offs, radiometric models, and system budgets for unconventional applications.
• Conduct feasibility studies, literature reviews, and trade analyses for initial mission, instrument, and data concepts.
• Assist with customer outreach, capability demonstrations, and proposal development.
• Produce technical proposals, white papers, and concept studies that articulate Muon's offerings and mission relevance while steering R&D roadmaps.
• B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in an engineering discipline, Physics, Optical Sciences, or equivalent experience.
• Over 5 years of experience as a systems or instrument engineer, with extensive technical expertise in the EO/IR payload engineering field.
• Background in infrared, multispectral, hyperspectral, or comparable remote sensing phenomenologies.
• Experience in EO/IR and related space missions within both government and commercial sectors.
• Proven ability in traditional systems engineering, encompassing requirements development, simulation/modeling, and comprehensive technical analysis.
• Proficiency in one or more programming languages, such as Python, Julia, or MATLAB, for modeling, simulation, and data analysis.
• Required ability to obtain a TS/SCI security clearance; active clearance is highly preferred.
• Willingness to travel 25–30% of the time.
• Understanding of early-stage business development, strategic capture, and customer discovery.
• Experience in developing radiometric models and/or scene simulations.
• Hands-on experience with rapid prototyping, experimental payloads, or capability demonstrations.
• Familiarity with space systems development, particularly small satellite remote sensing system architectures.
• Strong communication, presentation, and organizational skills.
• Excellent collaborative abilities for working across engineering, satellite operations, mission architecture, and business development teams.
