Senior Staff Software Engineer – Query Execution

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Portugal.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, test, and maintain query operators, expression evaluation, execution scheduling, runtime planning, and resource management systems.

• Enhance vectorized processing, concurrency, parallelism, memory utilization, data interchange, and disk spilling techniques.

• Analyze query correctness and performance challenges utilizing query profiles, profiling tools, telemetry, benchmarks, logs, and production datasets.

• Advance Java and JVM runtime features, focusing on CPU usage, allocation behavior, garbage collection, and thread management.

• Work collaboratively with Query Planner, Datalake, Product, Support, and field engineering teams to drive comprehensive query enhancements.

• Utilize AI-assisted development tools for code understanding, debugging, test generation, documentation, and incident evaluation.

• Assess AI-generated code and suggestions through reviews, testing, benchmarking, and engineering expertise.

• Engage in design and code reviews, influence technical direction, and mentor fellow engineers.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 5 years of experience in developing production software, ideally in database systems, query execution, distributed systems, or similar fields.

• Proficient in Java; familiarity with C++ is an advantage.

• Solid understanding of data structures, algorithms, concurrency, multithreaded programming, and asynchronous programming.

• Knowledge of database internals, query processing, distributed execution, and performance tuning.

• Experience in profiling and optimizing CPU, memory, garbage collection, thread behavior, or other runtime aspects.

• Capability to navigate ambiguous technical challenges and collaborate effectively across team boundaries.

• Skill in evaluating trade-offs, rigorously validating solutions, and making informed decisions with unfamiliar or AI-assisted implementations.

• Excellent communication skills, a strong sense of ownership, and a dedication to delivering high-quality software.

• Bonus: experience with distributed query engines, database engines, or large-scale data processing frameworks.

• Bonus: experience with vectorized execution, query operators, expression evaluation, code generation, or runtime optimization techniques.
