Senior Software Engineer, Underwriting

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, and sustain scalable backend services using Python and/or Go that facilitate underwriting decision-making and automation.

• Implement and enhance systems that integrate statistical and machine learning models to evaluate, price, and monitor cyber risk.

• Create and sustain alerts, monitoring systems, and dashboards to ensure operational stability, observability, and effective incident response.

• Produce clean, well-organized, and tested code, including comprehensive unit and integration tests.

• Lead small projects from inception to completion and serve as a technical leader on medium-to-large initiatives.

• Collaborate with product, underwriting, data science, and engineering teams effectively.

• Participate in architecture and design discussions with a focus on practicality, scalability, and decoupling.

• Automate and enhance underwriting and decision-making workflows utilized by internal underwriters and risk teams.

⛳️ Requirements

• Significant experience in building and managing backend APIs and services with Python and/or Go, including knowledge of common frameworks and design patterns.

• Practical experience with REST and at least one other transport mechanism or format, such as gRPC or GraphQL.

• Experience with source control systems (e.g., Git or similar).

• Hands-on experience with deploying and operating services in AWS or another major public cloud environment.

• Familiarity with contemporary observability and error-tracking tools like Sentry, Datadog, Jaeger/Zipkin, Graylog, or AppDynamics.

• Experience working as part of an agile software team and utilizing collaborative development tools such as the Atlassian suite, GitHub, or GitLab.

• A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent work experience.

• P4-level ownership: the ability to independently manage projects of moderate complexity, make informed technical decisions, and mentor less experienced engineers.
