Senior Software Engineer, Storage

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, and manage a source-of-truth, open-source NewSQL database operating on stateful Kubernetes.

• Take responsibility for performance, reliability, and stability of Airbnb's NewSQL engine at scale, covering storage, query execution, consensus, CDC, central routing, and shard management.

• Conduct in-depth technical investigations into database internals and address issues related to SQL latency and availability.

• Collaborate with the open-source database vendor for root cause analysis and contribute upstream.

• Develop infrastructure for two-way replication, automated failover and failback, and migration operations.

• Work together with Kernel, SRE, ORM, KV, and SQL interface teams to assist in internal customer onboarding and migration.

• Examine query and storage layers, including B-tree and LSM-based storage engines.

• Design and implement traffic prioritization at the storage layer for connection pooling.

• Validate and deploy CDC architecture while ensuring transactional correctness across shards.

• Create monitoring, observability, permissions, and service discovery tools surrounding the NewSQL database.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 5 years of experience in building and managing large-scale distributed systems, including storage, data ingestion, backup and restore, or streaming.

• Practical experience with database or storage internals such as query execution, storage engines, replication, or consensus mechanisms.

• Capability to take ownership and delve deeply into a complex codebase, preferably an open-source one.

• Experience in maintaining, analyzing, and troubleshooting high-severity production incidents.

• Ability to write clean, testable, and maintainable code.

• Excellent collaboration and communication skills in a remote work setting.

• Strong sense of ownership and a proven track record of successful delivery.
