Senior Software Engineer, Repositories

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Take charge of the technical direction for essential components of the Chainguard Repository, including customer-facing registries, APIs, and serving systems.

• Design, develop, and manage high-availability backend services in Go that serve libraries and facilitate future containers, images, and APK repositories.

• Lead efforts in scalability, reliability, observability, and load testing for production systems.

• Influence technical decisions regarding repository architecture, service boundaries, and operational patterns for artifact-serving infrastructure at scale.

• Collaborate with engineers across Chainguard to create a unified repository experience and support a wider range of artifact types.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 5 years of experience in building and managing production backend or infrastructure systems, with clear evidence of senior-level ownership.

• Proficient in Go, or possess extensive backend systems experience with a quick ability to adapt to Go.

• Proven experience in building or managing customer-facing infrastructure such as package registries, artifact repositories, APIs, developer platforms, or other high-scale serving systems.

• Experience in deploying and overseeing services in production, demonstrating sound judgment regarding reliability, observability, performance, and operational trade-offs.

• Comfortable working across application and infrastructure layers, including service development, cloud infrastructure, and infrastructure as code tools like Terraform.

• Strong systems instincts and curiosity: proactively identify issues, investigate them, and enhance the platform before problems become bottlenecks.

• Exceptional communication and collaboration abilities, particularly in a remote work setting.

• Preferred: Experience with package registries, artifact serving, repository products, or related systems such as Docker registries, GitLab package services, Artifactory, Nexus, or similar platforms.

• Preferred: Familiarity with software supply chain security concepts like provenance, SBOMs, and trusted artifact distribution.

• Preferred: Open-source experience, especially in tooling, package ecosystems, or infrastructure utilized by developers at scale.

• Preferred: Experience in supporting or expanding multi-artifact repository platforms across libraries, containers, OS packages, or similar artifact types.
