This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +1 more state.
• Design, implement, and take ownership of essential components within Ditto’s networking and transport stack.
• Collaborate on overlay networking, routing, virtual connections, channel lifecycle, and various physical transports/protocols such as BLE, LAN, Wi-Fi Aware, and AWDL.
• Re-architect the networking stack to create a modular, scalable, and high-performance design.
• Define clear interfaces and ownership boundaries between transport layers and mesh abstractions.
• Troubleshoot and enhance connectivity issues related to data transfer reliability, MTU negotiation, pairing instability, throughput limitations, and cross-platform synchronization.
• Develop and refine transport mechanisms for flow control, backpressure, congestion management, retries, connection lifecycle administration, and failure recovery.
• Identify and eliminate performance bottlenecks concerning latency, memory usage, CPU consumption, and tail behavior.
• Design protocol state machines, wire formats, and transport abstractions suitable for unreliable networks and constrained environments.
• Establish observability through logging, metrics, and diagnostics for production debugging and root-cause analysis.
• Contribute to Ditto’s vision of enabling resilient, real-time applications through peer-to-peer synchronization at the edge.
• Engage in a distributed, asynchronous team environment.
• Over 5 years of professional experience in systems software development, with a minimum of 3 years dedicated to networking, transport protocols, or routing.
• Strong expertise in Rust or C++.
• Familiarity with ownership and borrowing semantics, async runtimes, concurrency primitives, and profiling/optimization methods.
• Understanding of TCP, UDP, and QUIC semantics and trade-offs, including connection establishment, congestion and flow control, retransmission behavior, MTU/fragmentation, latency, throughput, and reliability.
• Experience with networked services and protocols.
• Ability to troubleshoot complex behaviors in networked and concurrent systems, including race conditions, deadlocks, resource leaks, and latency spikes.
• Experience in designing modular APIs and abstractions that can scale across various implementations and evolve safely over time.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills suited for a distributed, asynchronous team environment.
• Enthusiasm for learning new networking technologies, APIs, and methodologies.
• Preferred: experience with mesh networking protocols, routing algorithms, or gossip protocols.
• Preferred: understanding of mobile platform constraints, background execution models, battery optimization, and OS suspension/resume cycles.
• Preferred: experience with Apple Core Bluetooth or Android WiFi Aware APIs.
• Preferred: experience with Linux networking, sockets, async I/O, or low-level systems programming.
• Preferred: openness to travel once per quarter for in-person team gatherings.
• Required work authorization for employment in the United States.
• Competitive salaries.
• Meaningful equity.
• Comprehensive US health, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance.
• 401(k) plan.
• Flexible spending accounts.
• Flexible time off policy.
• Remote work opportunities.
• Optional access to the Atlanta office for work or team meetings.
• Willingness to travel once per quarter for in-person team gatherings is considered a plus.
