Senior Software Engineer, Ecommerce Web Applications

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Costa Rica.

📋 Description

• Spearhead the architecture, hands-on development, testing, deployment, documentation, and production support for PHP web applications (including a Symfony-based customer storefront and a Laravel back-office platform).

• Guide the front-end strategy using JavaScript (including jQuery) and CSS to create responsive, accessible, and high-performing customer experiences.

• Advocate for and enhance the team’s AI-assisted development workflows: utilize AI tools daily, share methodologies, and elevate the standards for their effective and responsible use.

• Manage the data layer: design and optimize queries and schema interactions with relational databases (SQL Server and PostgreSQL) and associated services.

• Establish and maintain engineering standards through code reviews, mentorship, testing methodologies, and comprehensive technical documentation (design documents, runbooks, onboarding materials).

• Enhance reliability, observability, alerting, and incident response for mission-critical, customer-facing systems.

• Recognize opportunities to streamline legacy components, minimize technical debt, and achieve long-term efficiency improvements.

• Decompose large initiatives into manageable tasks and effectively communicate status updates, roadblocks, and dependencies to engineering and product leadership.

• Collaborate with Product, QA, and Engineering leadership to deliver scalable, user-centric features that enhance business value.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.

• Over 5 years of professional software development experience, particularly in ecommerce or high-traffic web applications.

• Extensive, hands-on proficiency with PHP, including production experience with Symfony and/or Laravel frameworks.

• Strong front-end development skills in JavaScript and CSS, along with a solid understanding of web fundamentals (HTTP, browser behavior, performance, accessibility).

• Thorough understanding of relational databases and SQL, including experience with query optimization and schema design.

• Demonstrated experience in designing, building, and maintaining production systems with complete end-to-end ownership.

• Practical experience utilizing AI coding tools for development, with the capability to mentor others in their effective use. This is a team driven by AI development.

• Familiarity with testing practices (unit/integration), Git workflows, and CI/CD processes.

• Exceptional communication and collaboration skills, with a proven history of mentoring engineers and influencing technical direction.
