Senior Software Engineer, Canvas Core

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom, +2 more countries.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, and enhance the Canvas platform that drives Mural’s visual thinking experience.

• Take ownership of Canvas platform functionalities from problem identification to implementation, release, assessment, and iteration.

• Collaborate with Product and Design teams to create user experiences while balancing technical execution with platform requirements.

• Construct maintainable systems with a focus on quality, performance, reliability, and the developer experience.

• Contribute to user-friendly APIs, service boundaries, and platform agreements.

• Leverage AI-assisted tools and agentic workflows to prototype, implement, test, document, and evaluate work.

• Engage in technical design reviews, demonstrations, code evaluations, mentoring, and enhancements in engineering practices.

• Develop canvas systems incorporating document and object models, spatial indexing, layout behavior, asset management, and selection mechanics.

• Work on concurrent real-time collaboration systems, focusing on synchronization, event ordering, latency, conflict resolution, and failure handling.

• Design and integrate AI-enabled product features.

• Enhance performance through profiling, bottleneck analysis, architectural simplification, and targeted optimization.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proficiency in modern JavaScript/TypeScript, with experience in React, Node.js, or similar contemporary frameworks.

• Over 6 years of experience in developing and deploying large-scale production software as part of an agile engineering team.

• Demonstrated experience in designing and delivering scalable, reliable, high-performance systems and developer-oriented abstractions.

• Skilled in designing clear API contracts and service boundaries, including data models, versioning, validation, error handling, documentation, and maintainability.

• Experience in building distributed, concurrent, collaborative, or low-latency systems.

• Proven performance optimization experience, including profiling, bottleneck analysis, memory and CPU efficiency, latency reduction, and responsiveness.

• Hands-on experience with AI-assisted tools for prototyping, implementing, testing, documenting, and measuring engineering tasks.

• Strong communication and collaboration skills with Product, Design, and Engineering teams.

• Familiarity with complex systems featuring rich object models is a significant advantage.

• Interest in or practical experience with AI-enabled product functionalities.

• Knowledge of parallel processing, off-main-thread architectures, rendering pipelines, background computation, or multithreaded systems is a plus.

• Comfort working in high-growth, fast-paced environments or scale-ups is an added advantage.
