Senior Software Engineer, Backend – Applied AI

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, and implement backend services and product functionalities that integrate LLMs, machine learning models, and various AI systems.

• Create production-quality workflows that encompass model inference, structured outputs, tool utilization, retrieval, agentic workflows, and additional LLM application methodologies.

• Collaborate closely with Data Scientists to transition models and experimental strategies from exploration to reliable, maintainable production systems.

• Establish evaluation, observability, and feedback mechanisms to assess and enhance the performance of AI systems in a production environment.

• Architect systems that effectively manage the probabilistic and non-deterministic nature of AI models.

• Handle clinical and operational data across both structured and unstructured formats, including documents and images.

• Work in partnership with engineering, product, data science, and clinical teams to gain insights into user needs and quickly iterate on new concepts.

• Design and optimize the backend architecture that underpins SmarterDx’s applications at scale.

• Ensure patient privacy and security through secure coding practices and responsible data management.

• Investigate and promote enhanced techniques, architectures, and development practices as the applied AI landscape evolves.

• Provide support for SmarterDx’s applications and AI systems in live production environments.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 5 years of software development experience, with a strong focus on building backend and cloud-based systems.

• Proficient in Python and/or TypeScript, showcasing solid software engineering principles.

• Proven experience in developing LLM-powered applications that have been successfully deployed in production.

• Background in integrating models into comprehensive software systems rather than solely focusing on model training or ML infrastructure.

• Experience working collaboratively with Data Scientists, Machine Learning Engineers, or research-centric teams.

• Skilled in designing APIs, services, data models, and asynchronous or event-driven workflows.

• Familiarity with Postgres or a comparable relational database.

• Experience in building cloud-native distributed systems.

• Knowledge of evaluating, debugging, and monitoring AI systems in a production context.

• Strong judgment regarding reliability, testing, observability, and failure management in systems that utilize probabilistic model outputs.

• Experience working in a security-focused environment.

• Exceptional communication and collaboration skills across different functions.

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
