This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Design, develop, and manage backend systems that enable secure login, account management, authentication, and authorization for Upstart products.
• Take ownership of engineering projects from the initial problem definition and technical design to implementation, testing, deployment, and continuous improvement.
• Balance security requirements with user experience to safeguard customer data while minimizing unnecessary friction.
• Collaborate with Product, Information Security, Application Security, and engineering teams to provide secure capabilities and steer product direction.
• Enhance the reliability, maintainability, and security of interconnected systems and establish effective engineering practices within the Identity domain.
• Leverage AI-assisted development tools like Cursor and Claude Code to speed up learning and delivery while validating the outcomes of the work performed.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience, along with 4 years of software engineering experience.
• Proven experience in designing, building, testing, and maintaining production backend software or services.
• Demonstrated ability to manage software engineering projects through various stages of the development lifecycle, from technical design to production delivery.
• Experience in designing or integrating APIs, services, or other components within distributed or interconnected production systems.
• Proficient in code review, automated testing, debugging, and providing production support.
• Familiarity with identity and access management concepts and standards such as OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, or SAML (preferred).
• Experience working in a medium-to-large engineering organization or with systems that span multiple engineering teams (preferred).
• Frontend development experience in addition to backend systems (preferred).
• Experience utilizing AI-assisted development tools like Cursor, Claude Code, or similar tools (preferred).
• Ability to learn new technical domains, articulate technical decisions and outcomes clearly, and develop deep expertise over time (preferred).
