Senior Software Engineer – 3DS Payments

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in South Africa.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, and sustain backend services within the 3DS Payment platform.

• Create and uphold RESTful APIs and distributed systems.

• Develop and maintain Java applications deployed on Apache Tomcat.

• Design, optimize, and manage MySQL database schemas and queries.

• Identify and resolve issues related to performance, stability, and production.

• Contribute to architectural decisions and assess technical tradeoffs.

• Ensure adherence to secure coding practices and compliance standards.

• Collaborate with product, QA, and DevOps teams throughout the delivery lifecycle.

• Mentor and assist fellow engineers within the team.

• Take ownership of features and services from design to production.

⛳️ Requirements

• 5 - 8+ years of professional experience in software engineering with a strong command of Java (Java 11+ required; familiarity with newer LTS versions is a plus).

• Experience in developing applications that run on Apache Tomcat.

• Solid background with MySQL or similar relational databases, including:

• Schema design.

• Query optimization and indexing.

• Performance tuning and troubleshooting.

• Experience in building RESTful APIs and working with distributed systems.

• Strong grasp of software design principles (OOP, SOLID, clean architecture).

• Experience using Git or comparable version control systems.

• Strong understanding of secure coding practices, including OWASP Top 10.

• Experience in regulated environments (e.g., PCI DSS, GDPR).

• Experience in handling sensitive data such as cardholder information or PII.

• Nice-to-have:

• Experience with AWS (EC2, RDS, S3, IAM, CloudWatch).

• Exposure to cloud-native or cloud-migrated architectures.

• Experience with Docker and/or Kubernetes.

• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps methodologies.

• Experience in payments, fintech, or other high-security sectors.
