Senior Software Developer, Java

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Costa Rica.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, test, and sustain Java-based applications and services throughout the entire stack.

• Take ownership of production software from its design phase through deployment and ongoing support.

• Create and maintain RESTful APIs, integrations, and backend services utilizing Java and contemporary Java frameworks.

• Work with relational databases, SQL, data models, and application integrations.

• Assess, refactor, and modernize existing applications to enhance performance, scalability, maintainability, and reliability.

• Collaborate with product teams, design, QA, DevOps, and business stakeholders.

• Design scalable distributed systems and service-oriented or microservice architectures.

• Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, monitoring, deployment, and production support.

• Diagnose complex issues across applications, APIs, integrations, databases, and infrastructure.

• Utilize AI agents for design, planning, implementation, testing, debugging, and documentation, ensuring the validation and refinement of their outputs.

• Design, develop, and integrate AI agents and agentic workflows to automate engineering tasks and address product challenges.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 5 years of professional software development experience with a primary emphasis on Java.

• Practical experience with Open Liberty or a comparable Java application server/runtime platform.

• In-depth understanding of Java, object-oriented programming, application architecture, and RESTful API development.

• Familiarity with relational databases and SQL.

• Experience with enterprise applications, integrations, and distributed or microservice-based systems.

• Proficiency in automated testing, source control, CI/CD, deployment, and production support.

• Strong debugging and problem-solving capabilities for complex applications and technical dependencies.

• Familiarity with cloud platforms and associated infrastructure.

• Experience in modernizing or maintaining existing/legacy Java applications.

• Experience utilizing AI-assisted development tools or AI agents within the software development lifecycle.

• Capability to validate and enhance AI-generated work prior to production.

• Excellent communication and collaboration abilities in an Agile, cross-functional setting.

• Ability to work autonomously, take responsibility for complex initiatives, and continuously learn new technologies and engineering practices.

• Must reside in and be authorized to work in Costa Rica.
