Senior Protection and Control Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Design high-quality protection schemes for T&D substations, data centers, industrial applications, and BESS, including one-line, three-line, AC/DC schematics, and relay settings.

• Review, enhance, and certify protection and control designs using a P.E. stamp.

• Lead and oversee the technical aspects of AC power substation projects related to protection and control.

• Review, enhance, and certify auxiliary-system single-line diagrams and detailed designs.

• Analyze load-flow, fault, relay-setting coordination, and transient studies.

• Create or evaluate outage, cut-over, and testing procedures.

• Implement and support IEC 61850 process- and system-bus architectures.

• Collaborate with internal teams, external team members, customer technical representatives, and support organizations.

• Review post-fault records to ensure appropriate system operation.

• Lead or assist in factory acceptance testing and on-site testing and commissioning.

• Prepare proposals, technical specifications, man-hour and material estimates, vendor quotations, clarifications, exceptions, and technical responses.

• Utilize technical problem-solving and Lean techniques.

• Create design templates and tools for the secondary design engineering team.

• Define processes and procedures, conduct root-cause analyses, implement corrective actions, and validate process control.

• Support quality initiatives, including ISO 9002 compliance.

• Mentor the secondary design team and provide technical guidance.

• Represent GE in external standards committees such as IEEE.

• Potentially act as project engineering manager for small- to medium-sized projects focused on secondary engineering.

• Propel business strategy through a technical and economic understanding of the marketplace, delivering customer solutions.

• Continuously enhance technical knowledge to align with grid transition needs.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.

• Must hold a P.E. License in the United States.

• At least 10 years of experience in system protection schemes, relay selection, primary equipment interface requirements, operational analysis, communication systems, and maintenance practices for transmission, distribution, and generation protection applications at AIS and GIS substations.

• Minimum of 10 years in design reviews and providing technical mentorship.

• Willingness and ability to travel up to 10% of the time, including internationally, for meetings and on-site commissioning tests.

• Compliance with company travel and tax policies.

• Extensive experience in protective-relaying coordination and practices.

• Understanding of circuit breakers, fuses, circuit switchers, transformers, shunt reactors, capacitor banks, harmonic filters, HVDC, and FACTS systems.

• Must be a member of a standards committee such as IEEE or demonstrate willingness to become one.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills.

• Strong interpersonal and leadership capabilities.

• Organized, passionate, and goal-oriented.

• Ability to work effectively under pressure while managing change and complexity in dynamic environments.
