This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New York.
• Edit and produce approximately 35 to 40 books annually, or manage 15 to 25 books concurrently.
• Oversee the production editorial workflow from manuscript evaluation through to proofreading, indexing, and verifying text, photo inserts, and jackets/covers.
• Manage production editorial activities for both original fiction and nonfiction titles, guiding them from manuscript to finished book, including paperback adaptations.
• Format manuscripts electronically for design and composition purposes.
• Recruit freelance copyeditors, proofreaders, and indexers, while assessing their work throughout all stages.
• Organize and finalize copyedited, author-approved manuscripts for design and typesetting.
• Compile author and freelancer revisions in page proofs and address queries prior to transmission.
• Edit jacket/cover text and marketing collateral, proofread jackets/covers, and insert captions and other supplementary materials.
• Collaborate with Production, Design, and Editorial teams on scheduling, editorial changes, and legal directives.
• Track project progress in digital management systems by adhering to file-naming conventions and established best practices.
• Offer task-specific and project-specific assistance to other production editors during their absences.
• Comprehensive experience in adult trade fiction and nonfiction.
• Capacity to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.
• Proficiency in anticipating issues, troubleshooting, and setting priorities.
• Strong command of grammar and punctuation.
• In-depth knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style.
• Exceptional attention to detail and capability to perform under pressure.
• Effective oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to meet deadlines while juggling multiple projects.
• Discretionary collaboration skills, practicality, and initiative.
• Seven to ten years of experience as a production editor, ideally in adult trade fiction/nonfiction.
• Advanced copyediting and proofreading expertise.
• Proficient in Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat (including PDF markup tools), and Workflow/Metadata systems.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience.
