Senior Product Designer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in South Africa.

📋 Description

• Oversee the comprehensive design process for one or more products, from UX research to refined, production-ready interfaces.

• Collaborate closely with teams in Product, Engineering, and Data Science.

• Organize and lead user research activities, including interviews, usability testing, surveys, and workshops.

• Convert research insights into practical design directives.

• Develop and maintain user personas, journey maps, and research artifacts.

• Conduct competitive and market analysis to shape product positioning and design strategy.

• Take ownership of intricate product areas, managing everything from problem framing and ideation to detailed UI, interaction design, and handoff.

• Work in partnership with Product Managers, Engineers, and Data Scientists to deliver desirable and technically feasible outcomes.

• Create, sustain, and enhance scalable design systems, component libraries, and documentation.

• Articulate design choices to stakeholders using research, data, and logical reasoning.

• Factor in accessibility, ethical considerations, and inclusivity in design processes.

• Provide mentorship to junior and mid-level designers.

• Contribute to the overall design processes, culture, and operational methods of the team.

• Advocate for user-centered design throughout the organization.

• Help define the design operations at Sand as a senior-level contributor.

⛳️ Requirements

• Minimum of 5 years of experience in product design (60 months), with a robust portfolio showcasing complex, released enterprise or commercial products.

• Experience in designing for data-intensive or dashboard-centric interfaces.

• Comprehensive understanding of the entire design process: research, information architecture, interaction design, visual design, testing, and implementation with software engineers.

• Proficient in Figma and AI-driven design tools.

• Demonstrated ability to work efficiently in agile, cross-functional teams.

• Excellent communication skills with the capacity to clearly articulate design decisions.

• Comfortable navigating ambiguity and capable of creating clarity from it.

• Willingness and ability to travel across the African continent.

• Nice-to-have: Experience in the government, energy, or enterprise B2B & SaaS industries.

• Nice-to-have: Familiarity with designing AI/ML products and collaborating with data science teams.

• Comfortable working in small teams while contributing to broader, globally coordinated initiatives.

• Strong sense of ownership, self-motivation, and a disciplined approach to maintaining clear and consistent communication through virtual collaboration tools and video conferencing.
