This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Act as the main legal contact for day-to-day operations concerning assigned Zillow Home Loans mortgage products.
• Offer comprehensive legal counsel throughout the entire lifecycle, from concept and design to launch and subsequent iterations.
• Guide product and engineering teams on both state and federal mortgage regulatory standards.
• Collaborate with AI/ML engineering teams to establish compliance protocols for AI-driven and agentic functionalities.
• Evaluate model outputs and create assessment criteria for legal and regulatory adherence.
• Provide risk-informed advice on product design and necessary disclosures.
• Work closely with business partners on initial concerns, pilot projects, and significant initiatives.
• Present legal risk assessments and recommendations to upper management.
• Draft, review, and negotiate commercial agreements and data rights contracts.
• Collaborate with compliance, privacy, fair lending, marketing, and communications teams.
• Educate product, engineering, and business partners on legal requirements related to mortgage and lending.
• Over 7 years of relevant experience either in a national or regional law firm or within an in-house legal department.
• Significant background in consumer finance, mortgage, or product counseling.
• Preferred in-house experience at a mortgage lender, fintech, or prop tech company.
• Juris Doctor (JD) degree.
• Active admission to the state bar in at least one jurisdiction.
• Profound understanding of the mortgage and consumer lending regulatory landscape, including RESPA, TILA, ECOA, UDAAP, and state mortgage licensing.
• Experience in advising on product development processes.
• Proven experience in drafting and negotiating vendor, technology, or services agreements.
• General knowledge of GLBA, TCPA, and the emerging state and federal regulations regarding AI and algorithms is a plus.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities.
• Strong organizational skills with the capability to independently manage multiple competing and time-sensitive projects.
• Good judgment on when to make decisions, consult a subject matter expert, or escalate issues.
• Proven track record of building trust and collaborating effectively across various departments and organizational levels.
