Senior PLC Technician

📋 Description

• Develop, organize, and implement intricate field assignments that involve paralleling switchgear and PLC/relay transfer schemes.

• Oversee functional and integrated testing of emergency and standby power systems.

• Set up, validate, and troubleshoot generator controls, load-sharing systems, protective relays, switchgear controls, meters, breakers, PLCs, HMIs/ACS platforms, and communication systems.

• Conduct advanced troubleshooting and authorized modifications of PLC ladder logic, PLC I/O, communications, sequencing, and ACS parameters.

• Establish and resolve Modbus, PLC-to-PLC, redundant PLC, remote PLC, PLC-to-ACS, and customer BMS/EPMS/SCADA communications.

• Analyze one-line diagrams, schematics, interconnection drawings, sequence-of-operations documents, coordination studies, settings files, and commissioning procedures.

• Direct on-site technical execution, coordinate daily tasks, communicate status and risks, manage punch-list closure, and ensure timely and budget-compliant project completion.

• Supervise and guide junior field engineers and technicians.

• Act as a senior escalation resource for remote and on-site troubleshooting, including emergency situations.

• Complete field service reports, startup checklists, redlines, test documentation, software backups, time entry, expense reports, and customer-facing status updates.

• Safeguard ABB and customer assets, manage job costs, and identify areas for quality, productivity, and service enhancements.

• Foster customer relationships by translating technical discoveries into actionable insights, recommendations, risks, and recovery strategies.


⛳️ Requirements

• High school diploma or GED with over 7 years of relevant field experience, or an associate or bachelor’s degree with more than 5 years in a related domain.

• Proven capability to work independently on highly complex assignments.

• Advanced knowledge of low- and medium-voltage switchgear, circuit breakers, protective relays, generator controls, PLC-based systems, HMIs/ACS, industrial networking, and mission-critical power systems.

• Practical experience in leading startup and commissioning tasks, coordinating energization and switching, troubleshooting under time constraints, and directing multi-person site teams.

• Proficient in reading, interpreting, and redlining complex electrical and control diagrams while applying approved engineering methodologies in the field.

• Strong analytical, problem-solving, customer communication, technical reporting, and field leadership capabilities.

• Willingness and ability to travel extensively within the United States and stay at customer sites for prolonged periods.

• Capability to comply with ABB and customer site access, electrical safety, training, and personal protective equipment protocols.

• Authorization to work in the United States without necessitating ABB sponsorship, where applicable.

• Preferred familiarity with ABB Energy Commander or similar paralleling switchgear and control systems.

• Experience with GE/Emerson RX3i PLCs, Proficy Machine Edition, ABB AC500, Automation Builder, CP600 HMI/Panel Builder, Cimplicity, or similar platforms.

• Experience with Woodward EasyGen and LS5 generator controls and load-sharing systems.

• Familiarity with ABB, SEL/Schweitzer, Multilin, Basler, or Woodward protective relays and testing/configuration tools.

• Knowledge of Modbus, industrial Ethernet, fiber-optic networks, redundant control networks, BMS, EPMS, and SCADA integration.

• Experience with low- and medium-voltage breaker testing, CT/PT verification, relay testing, primary/secondary injection, turns-ratio, winding-resistance, insulation, power-factor, hipot, phase-rotation, and related commissioning test equipment.

• Background in utility paralleling, emergency standby generation, complex load management, data center commissioning, and third-party commissioning coordination.
