This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Alabama, +21 more states.
• Establish database architecture standards and lead technical decisions across ROI’s products and platforms.
• Manage the multi-year strategy for capacity, technical debt, and database modernization.
• Assess database technologies and cloud services according to their reliability, scalability, security, and cost-effectiveness.
• Provide senior technical oversight and escalation support for both Oracle production and non-production environments.
• Direct performance tuning, SQL optimization, capacity planning, and troubleshooting in collaboration with developers.
• Enhance monitoring, backup, recovery, high availability, and disaster-recovery procedures.
• Lead root-cause analysis for major incidents and take part in a shared on-call rotation.
• Set standards for database architecture, design, SQL development, documentation, and operations.
• Review major schema changes, migrations, procedural objects, and database designs.
• Formulate a practical modernization strategy for ROI’s established Oracle environment.
• Evaluate Oracle on AWS, cloud-native services, and other database platforms.
• Automate database administration, deployment, monitoring, testing, and maintenance tasks.
• Mentor engineers on relational design, SQL performance, and database best practices.
• Produce documentation, training materials, reusable patterns, and automation to enhance shared database knowledge.
• Clarify roles, knowledge expectations, and escalation procedures with the managed services provider.
• Offer database expertise for data pipelines, client conversions, migrations, and key product initiatives.
• Collaborate with data and engineering teams to facilitate scalable, secure, and efficient data movement.
• Act as the senior technical liaison to ROI’s database managed services provider.
• Define responsibilities, escalation routes, service expectations, and SLAs, while evaluating service quality.
• Assess database-related vendors, technologies, and services as necessary.
• 8+ years of experience in Oracle database administration within complex production environments.
• Advanced expertise in Oracle performance tuning, SQL optimization, and query-plan analysis.
• Strong understanding of Oracle RAC, Data Guard, RMAN, ASM, and partitioning.
• Working knowledge of PL/SQL sufficient for reviewing, troubleshooting, and advising on database-resident code.
• Solid skills in relational database architecture, design, and data modeling.
• Experience with backup, recovery, high availability, and disaster-recovery planning and testing.
• Knowledge of database security, auditing, access management, and compliance-oriented environments, such as PCI.
• Ability to diagnose complex performance and reliability issues across applications and database infrastructure.
• Excellent communication, collaboration, prioritization, and mentoring abilities.
• Must be available to work in the Eastern Time Zone.
• Candidates must reside in one of the following states: AL, AR, CO, FL, IL, IN, KY, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, NC, NH, NJ, PA, SC, TX, VA, VT, WA, WI, WV, or DC.
• Preferred: Experience in developing or implementing Oracle modernization and cloud migration strategies.
• Preferred: Experience with Oracle workloads on AWS (Oracle DB@AWS).
• Preferred: Familiarity with AWS RDS, Aurora, or other cloud-native database technologies.
• Preferred: Experience in evaluating Oracle against alternative database platforms.
• Preferred: Experience with data pipeline and transformation technologies.
• Preferred: Knowledge of Datadog or similar database monitoring and observability platforms.
• Preferred: Oracle Certified Professional (OCP) or an equivalent Oracle certification.
• Preferred: Experience with SaaS, transaction-intensive, fundraising, payment, financial, or other mission-critical software platforms.
• Preferred: Background in a small or mid-sized technology organization.
• Preferred: Experience in automating database administration, monitoring, deployment, or operational processes.
• Limited travel requirements, typically less than five trips per year for in-person team meetings, planning, or company events.
