Senior Mechanical Procurement Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in District of Columbia.

📋 Description

• Utilize mechanical engineering, manufacturing process, and procurement expertise to make sourcing decisions, develop Statements of Work (SOW), prepare Requests for Proposals (RFPs), and evaluate supplier proposals for build-to-print and prototype assemblies in the Department of Defense (DoD).

• Analyze and interpret technical drawings, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), engineering notes, and Technical Data Packages (TDPs).

• Evaluate supplier methodologies for technical viability and cost efficiency.

• Collaborate with program engineers and designers to draft Subcontractor Statements of Work and assist Procurement Buyers/SCAs with RFPs and bidding documents.

• Review supplier proposals and contribute technical insights for source selection decisions.

• Collect and analyze statistical data to evaluate purchasing feasibility and set pricing objectives.

• Aid in supplier negotiations by examining manufacturing processes, production costs, and cost-effective options while ensuring quality, reliability, and adherence to schedules.

• Monitor price trends and manufacturing process data to assist program budgets and timelines.

• Oversee supplier performance, identify potential risks, and formulate mitigation strategies.

• Assess supplier capacity and production-related risks.

• Travel to supplier sites for vendor evaluations and assessments of manufacturing processes.

• Work in conjunction with Supplier Quality Engineers and procurement teams to address supplier performance challenges and advocate for the organization on complex technical matters.

• Follow up on orders, confirm delivery, approve payments, and maintain procurement documentation.

• Collaborate with Procurement Buyers/SCAs to ensure purchase orders align with technical specifications and program goals.

• Act as a technical liaison among engineering, procurement, and logistics teams.

• Utilize ERP systems, preferably Costpoint, to oversee procurement transactions, track outstanding orders, and maintain program information.


⛳️ Requirements

• A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering is preferred; degrees in Manufacturing Engineering or closely related engineering fields are also considered.

• A minimum of 5 years of experience in mechanical engineering, procurement engineering, or a combination of both; a Master's degree with 3+ years of relevant experience is also acceptable.

• Proven experience supporting build-to-print and/or prototype manufacturing programs, ideally within a DoD or defense contracting context.

• Proficient in reading and interpreting technical drawings, GD&T, and Technical Data Packages (TDPs).

• Practical knowledge of manufacturing processes and their effects on supplier capabilities, cost factors, and program timelines.

• Familiarity with procurement processes, including RFP development, SOW drafting, supplier negotiations, source selection, and contract management.

• Ability to compile and analyze statistical and pricing data to aid in cost analysis and develop pricing objectives.

• Experience in identifying and supporting the mitigation of supplier and supply chain risks.

• Strong attention to detail, along with excellent analytical, written, and verbal communication skills.

• A collaborative team player capable of working effectively across engineering, procurement, supply chain, and quality teams.

• A self-motivated individual who manages priorities efficiently under general supervision and exercises sound independent judgment.

• Willingness and ability to travel approximately 20% of the time to supplier locations.

• Capacity to remain highly engaged, responsive, and proactive in a fully remote work setting.

• An active Secret security clearance is required or the ability to obtain one.

• Preferred: experience in aerospace, defense, or government contracting with a solid understanding of DoD program requirements and acquisition processes.

• Preferred: familiarity with FAR/DFARS regulations and government procurement standards.

• Preferred: experience with the Costpoint ERP system.

• Preferred: knowledge of SolidWorks for reviewing and interpreting 3D models and engineering designs.

• CPSM or equivalent supply chain/procurement certification is a plus.

• Exposure to ITAR-controlled programs or export-controlled materials is advantageous.

• Proven ability to leverage AI tools for enhancing procurement research, data analysis, cost tracking, and workflow efficiency.
