This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +1 more state.
• Develop and innovate heat rejection and HVAC systems tailored for data centers.
• Choose air/water-side cooling systems, which include fan wall units, CRAHs, chilled water systems, DX systems, CRAC units, in-row cooling, and containment strategies.
• Execute internal and external CFD simulations to enhance airflow, pinpoint hotspots, and assess the impact of components on both building and campus levels.
• Prepare or oversee the preparation of CFD models, analyze the resulting data, and suggest design modifications.
• Coordinate design alterations and their implications with other project trades.
• Design HVAC systems that are redundant and fault-tolerant, encompassing backup cooling, automatic switchover, and monitoring systems.
• Conduct heat-load assessments and capacity planning based on IT equipment specifications, power density, expected growth, and construction schedules.
• Execute HVAC load calculations for administrative and common facility areas.
• Implement energy-efficient HVAC solutions, including economizers, variable-speed drives, energy recovery, and airflow optimization measures.
• Design air quality monitoring and filtration systems to safeguard sensitive IT equipment.
• Collaborate with electrical and mechanical engineers to ensure seamless integration of HVAC with electrical infrastructure, UPS, emergency power, fire suppression, and other vital systems.
• Engage directly with clients on high-stakes, fast-paced data center projects.
• Collaborate with AECOM teams globally.
• Bachelor’s Degree with over 8 years of relevant experience or proven equivalency of experience and/or education.
• Familiarity with data center mechanical and electrical equipment installation and operation.
• P.E. registration is mandatory.
• Expertise or knowledge of requirements specific to data centers, mission-critical environments, and the tech sector.
• Understanding of the data center TER Standard Topology as outlined by the Uptime Institute, TIA 942, and ANSI/BICSI 002.
• A bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, HVAC engineering, or a related discipline from an accredited institution is generally required.
• Professional certifications in HVAC engineering, such as CEM, BEMP, or LEED accreditation, are preferred.
