This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Take full responsibility for end-to-end payroll processing for all US employees at Rippling across more than 30 states, encompassing bi-weekly pay runs, off-cycle payments, bonuses, commissions, relocation, fringe benefits, deductions, garnishments, and final payments.
• Manage payroll delivery for international and global EOR populations, collaborating with Rippling, Deel, and local providers.
• Ensure compliance with payroll tax regulations across federal, state, and local jurisdictions, including registrations, withholding and unemployment accounts, filings, amendments, and resolving agency notices.
• Prepare for payroll readiness as the company expands into new states and countries, advising on EOR versus direct entity models.
• Oversee payroll's equity processes, including taxable equity events and coordination with Finance and Legal departments.
• Prepare and reconcile payroll journal entries and payroll-related balance sheet accounts; work in partnership with Accounting on accruals and month-end closing.
• Handle year-end processing, including W-2 production and corrections, along with equivalent international and EOR filings.
• Act as the primary payroll liaison for state and workers' compensation audits.
• Design, document, and maintain payroll controls, approval workflows, segregation of duties, and desktop procedures.
• Establish payroll calendars, cut-off deadlines, and data transfers with People Operations, Talent Acquisition, and Finance.
• Assess and implement payroll systems and automation, including potential ADP implementation or migration.
• Build the payroll function, define the target operating model, justify headcount needs, and recruit, onboard, and develop the future payroll team.
• Generate payroll metrics, variance analysis, and labor cost reports for People and Finance leadership.
• A minimum of 8 years of hands-on payroll experience with complete ownership of US multi-state payroll.
• At least 2 years in a senior payroll position within a company or leading a payroll team.
• Direct experience managing payroll in Rippling, including EOR populations.
• Familiarity with nexus determination, reciprocity, SUI and SDI, supplemental withholding rates, local levies, and agency management.
• Experience managing payroll through EOR and local provider models.
• Knowledge of equity payroll mechanics and stock plan administration data.
• Understanding of RSU settlement, option exercise withholding, and income sourcing.
• Proficiency with GL mapping, balance sheet reconciliation, accruals, and supporting month-end close processes.
• Proven ability to advise leadership, escalate issues promptly, challenge inaccuracies in upstream data, and hold partner teams accountable to deadlines.
• CPP (Certified Payroll Professional) is strongly preferred.
• Practical experience with Deel or another secondary EOR platform is preferred.
• Background in implementing or migrating payroll platforms such as ADP or Workday is preferred.
• Experience helping a company transition from pre-IPO to a liquidity event is preferred.
• Exposure to SOX, IPO readiness, or establishing financial controls from the ground up is preferred.
• Experience with payroll and equity tax treatment for mobile employee populations is preferred.
• Experience supporting a venture-backed technology company that has scaled beyond 500 employees and into new countries is preferred.
• Proficiency in Excel, including the use of formulas and v-lookups to manage data outputs from various sources, is preferred.
