Senior Manager, AV Behavior Safety Engineering

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Lead the strategy and facilitate the execution of defining, measuring, and validating the safety of SAE Level 3–4 automated driving systems powered by machine-learned models.

• Report to the AV Safety Strategy and Assurance organization and influence launch decisions for next-generation automated driving products.

• Analyze ISO 21448 (SOTIF), ISO 5083, and AVSC best practices to shape GM's strategy for the safe development, validation, and deployment of autonomous systems.

• Oversee the behavior-focused section of the ADS Safety Case, which encompasses claims, sufficiency criteria, and recommended evidence.

• Collaborate with teams in Software Validation, Embodied AI, Simulation, and Safety Metrics to establish an end-to-end AV behavior validation methodology.

• Develop strategies for segmenting operational design domains and validating performance by behavior and collectively.

• Work together on evaluation metrics, human benchmarks, safety launch targets, and safety performance indicators.

• Evaluate AV performance using simulation, closed-course, and public-road data while providing prioritized feedback to engineering teams.

• Define and implement an assurance process to verify sufficiency criteria and safety targets for launch preparedness.

• Recruit, lead, and nurture a high-performing AV behavior safety engineering team.

• Establish goals and expectations, provide coaching and mentorship to team members, and enhance technical expertise in AV behavior safety, validation, and safety case development.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field.

• 8+ years of experience in machine learning, engineering, data science, or a related area.

• 8+ years in autonomous vehicle or robotics development or a related sector.

• Proven experience in production-intent AV programs.

• A solid record of providing technical safety leadership in AV development.

• In-depth understanding of AV behavior development, including ODDs, behaviors, evaluation criteria, and analysis of simulation, closed-course, and public-road test data.

• Experience applying AV safety standards and best practices, including ISO 5083, ISO 21448 (SOTIF), and AVSC practices.

• Exceptional communication and storytelling abilities.

• Capacity to influence cross-functional teams without direct authority.

• Strong problem-solving skills, comfort with ambiguity, and a proactive approach to learning and continuous improvement.

• 3+ years of experience in people leadership, including hiring, leading, and developing high-performing technical teams.

• Preferred: Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field.
