This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Montana.
• Develop and implement projects and partnerships with the USDA Forest Service in Montana.
• Collaborate effectively with staff from American Forests and the USDA Forest Service.
• Oversee program logistics and field operations.
• Assist in grant and agreement management, which includes invoicing, reporting, grant writing, budget reforecasting, payment requests, match documentation, and modifications.
• Manage field staff supported by agreements with the USFS.
• Promote regional reforestation initiatives and partnerships on National Forest System lands.
• Handle reforestation and forest resilience partnerships, including meetings, reporting, and budgeting.
• Create new forest restoration projects, plans, partnerships, and agreements.
• Supervise reforestation activities such as planning, unit layout, contract administration, field implementation, quality control, planting, release, monitoring, surveys, and inventory.
• Coordinate field data collection, analysis, and adaptive management processes.
• Ensure field and safety logistics are managed effectively and required safety training is provided.
• Organize field protocols, templates, and best practices.
• Maintain expertise in silviculture, reforestation, forestry, and natural resource management.
• Cultivate relationships with agencies and regional stakeholders.
• Supervise seasonal and full-time staff, including managing timesheets, leave approvals, performance evaluations, and administrative tasks.
• Lead recruitment, hiring, and training efforts as necessary.
• Provide on-site supervisory support to staff and field crews.
• Assist with contractor relationship management and oversight.
• Help organize meetings, conferences, and events.
• Deliver public presentations.
• Plan and conduct site visits and field tours.
• Report to the Director, Northern Rockies, and supervise or support up to five direct reports.
• Bachelor’s degree in forestry or natural resources and a minimum of three (3) years of experience; or a Master’s degree in forestry or natural resources with at least two (2) years of experience.
• Experience in field forestry and/or reforestation.
• Experience in planning and executing forest management actions on federal lands.
• Proven experience in conducting fieldwork and implementing field-based projects.
• Experience in supervising teams, ideally in field-based and remote settings.
• Proficiency in project and partnership management.
• Experience with USDA Forest Service partnerships or projects is preferred.
• Strong organizational, project management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• State forestry license and/or Society of American Foresters Certified Forester certification is preferred.
• Current First Aid certification or willingness to be sponsored for certification.
• Familiarity with GPS and GIS tools, including AGOL, Field Maps, and Survey123 for mapping and geospatial data analysis.
• Experience in contract oversight and administration is preferred.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• Ability to travel frequently to various work sites.
• Spanish language skills are preferred.
• Capability to lift materials weighing up to 40 lbs.
