This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Minnesota.
• Assess life insurance applications within the assigned authority by evaluating medical, financial, and lifestyle risk factors.
• Determine the acceptability of applications and their appropriate classification.
• Detect potential fraud and ensure adherence to underwriting guidelines.
• Make prompt and precise decisions while balancing risk selection, competitiveness, and customer experience.
• Recommend decisions and provide justification for cases that exceed authority limits or are of higher complexity.
• Order necessary and suitable requirements to efficiently assess risk.
• Manage workload to meet or surpass productivity and quality expectations.
• Approve applications up to established authority limits, including amounts over $3M for all ages and ratings.
• Collaborate with reinsurers on rated cases and extensive case reviews.
• Develop and sustain relationships with brokers, advisors, and internal partners.
• Clearly, professionally, and empathetically communicate underwriting decisions.
• Identify opportunities to enhance underwriting processes and improve customer experience.
• Contribute to departmental initiatives and special projects.
• Provide insights and solutions to management regarding team dynamics, workflow, and operational challenges.
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
• At least 7 years of experience in life underwriting.
• Proven expertise in substandard underwriting.
• Proven expertise in large case underwriting.
• Knowledge of underwriting related to medical and financial risk assessment.
• Strong decision-making abilities with the capacity to act independently in real time.
• Demonstrated capability to analyze complex cases and utilize sound judgment.
• Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Ability to document rationale clearly and consistently.
• Proficiency in financial underwriting, including business cases.
• Understanding of reinsurance principles and when to engage partners.
• Results-driven with a focus on quality and productivity.
• Agile mindset, emphasizing continuous improvement and innovation.
