This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Massachusetts.
β’ Take ownership of the utility interconnection and new-service initiative across Highland's development portfolio, overseeing the process from initial diligence to energized service.
β’ Lead utility diligence efforts to verify each site's feasibility from a utility perspective β assessing available capacity, service voltage, necessary upgrades, timelines, and costs.
β’ Prepare and oversee new utility service and interconnection applications, ensuring they progress to approval on an expedited, portfolio-wide timeline.
β’ Act as Highland's main liaison with electric utilities, overseeing utility timelines, budgets, and any escalations.
β’ Functionally supervise and evaluate the quality of external partners engaged in utility diligence and application processes.
β’ Ensure utility workflows align with design and permitting processes so that utility milestones are integrated into design packages punctually.
β’ Manage the selection of rate schedules and tariffs.
β’ Contribute utility upgrade and service costs to project budgets, aiding in the development of a repeatable unit-cost installation framework.
β’ Establish and maintain a repository of utility requirements, processes, and contacts categorized by territory.
β’ Cultivate relationships and standardized interconnection playbooks with major utilities.
β’ Proactively eliminate utility roadblocks before they impact project timelines.
β’ Report directly to the Vice President of Development & Construction.
β’ Willingness to travel approximately 20% of the time.
β’ Bachelor's degree or 8+ years of relevant professional experience.
β’ Significant experience collaborating with electric utilities β including interconnection, new service requests, and service upgrades β from the developer, customer, or utility perspective.
β’ Program or portfolio management experience coordinating multiple concurrent projects and external partners.
β’ Proven ability to advance utility applications and approvals within tight timelines.
β’ Demonstrated experience in negotiating phased or partial interconnection agreements with utilities.
β’ Experience with utility interconnection for distributed energy resources (e.g., BESS, solar) or large commercial/industrial electrical loads.
β’ Familiarity with EV charging, edge compute/data center power, or renewable energy development.
β’ Knowledge of interconnection standards and utility processes (such as IEEE 1547, utility tariffs, and state interconnection regulations).
β’ Experience collaborating with permitting authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs) and engineering consultants.
β’ Previous experience at or embedded within an electric utility; PMP or equivalent certification is preferred.
