Senior Hydrogeologist, Groundwater Modeler

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Design, calibrate, implement, and assess numerical groundwater flow models for projects related to mining, environmental concerns, and water resources.

• Provide modeling support for mine dewatering, depressurization, inflows from pits and underground workings, groundwater recovery, contaminant transport, seepage, closure, and water management initiatives.

• Create and analyze conceptual hydrogeologic models utilizing geological data, field observations, monitoring records, hydraulic testing, groundwater chemistry, and project constraints.

• Assess model assumptions, calibration processes, uncertainties, sensitivities, limitations, and their implications for client decision-making.

• Draft technical reports, model documentation, presentations, proposals, scopes of work, budgets, and project plans.

• Act as a technical reviewer and internal resource to ensure quality in groundwater modeling.

• Guide junior and intermediate staff in modeling techniques, hydrogeologic interpretations, and effective technical communication.

• Work autonomously on intricate assignments and oversee modeling tasks or projects.

• Collaborate with hydrogeologists, geomechanics engineers, engineering geologists, geochemists, data scientists, and software developers.

• Enhance ITASCA’s modeling expertise, workflows, training resources, and technical capabilities.

• Assist in the development of MINEDW code, feature enhancements, user training materials, and relevant marketing content.

⛳️ Requirements

• Advanced degree in hydrogeology, geochemistry, environmental engineering, or a related discipline.

• Approximately 10–20 years of pertinent professional experience.

• Demonstrated technical excellence in groundwater flow modeling.

• Extensive experience in the development, calibration, application, and interpretation of numerical groundwater models.

• Familiarity with conceptual hydrogeologic models, hydrogeologic data analysis, and model documentation.

• Capability to critically assess model assumptions, calibration, uncertainties, sensitivities, and limitations.

• Experience working independently on complex technical projects.

• Proficient in supervising, managing, mentoring, and reviewing the work of others.

• Excellent technical writing, verbal communication, and presentation abilities.

• Proficient in supporting proposals, work programs, and client communications.

• Experience with MINEDW, MODFLOW, FEFLOW, HydroGeoSphere, MIKE SHE, Groundwater Vistas, MT3D/transport modeling tools, PEST, or similar modeling platforms.

• Background in the mining industry, particularly in areas such as mine dewatering, depressurization, pit inflow, pore-pressure estimation, water balance, closure, groundwater recovery, or operational hydrogeology.

• Experience with finite-element and/or finite-difference groundwater modeling techniques.

• Knowledge in contaminant transport modeling, parameter estimation, uncertainty analysis, sensitivity analysis, or stochastic modeling.

• Programming or scripting skills in Python, R, VBA, or comparable tools.

• Familiarity with GIS, 3-D visualization, large datasets, database tools, or model pre/post-processing workflows.

• Experience in field investigation design, aquifer testing, hydraulic testing, groundwater monitoring, or data collection initiatives.

• Experience in creating modeling workflows, training materials, software documentation, or user-facing technical documents.

• Professional registration with a recognized organization, or the ability to obtain registration where necessary.
