This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Oversee the creation of comprehensive species range maps for all marine and anadromous taxa in accordance with the FWS Range Mapping Standard Operating Procedure.
• Review the FWS Range Mapping SOP prior to or during the project kickoff.
• Collect and standardize spatial data from outputs of cloud data platforms, implementing CRS transformations and standardizing spatial formats.
• Verify spatial intersections against authoritative geographic layers, addressing changing habitat boundaries and overlapping Critical Habitat designations.
• Coordinate iterative range map evaluations with FWS Ecological Services and NOAA Fisheries subject matter experts (SMEs).
• Integrate feedback and create updated versions of the maps.
• Develop quality assurance documentation for each range map and ensure they comply with SOP acceptance criteria prior to government submission.
• Manage the sign-off process from FWS Ecological Services on the Range Map Set deliverable.
• Assist in the creation of updated range maps following production as part of operational handoff documentation.
• A Bachelor's degree with 8 years of professional experience, or a Master's degree with 6 years of professional experience, or an Associate's degree with 10 years of professional experience, or a high school diploma/equivalent with 12 years of professional experience.
• U.S. Citizenship is mandatory.
• Capability to obtain and uphold a Public Trust clearance.
• All work must be conducted within the United States.
• Significant GIS experience emphasizing species range mapping or federal environmental applications.
• Direct familiarity with the FWS Range Mapping SOP or comparable federal range mapping standards.
• Expertise in ArcGIS, QGIS, or similar GIS platforms.
• Proficiency in Python for GIS automation and spatial data processing, including ArcPy or similar scripting libraries.
• Competence in SQL for querying and validating spatial data within cloud data platforms.
• Experience with coordinate reference system transformations and spatial data standardization.
• Background in conducting spatial intersect validation and Critical Habitat analysis.
• Strong skills in QA documentation for geospatial deliverables.
• Preferred: Experience with NOAA Fisheries marine or anadromous species range data.
• Preferred: Knowledge of Databricks or cloud data platforms for spatial data retrieval.
• Preferred: Experience in coordinating formal government deliverable approvals.
• Preferred: GISP certification or its equivalent.
