This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Design, develop, test, and support full-stack applications utilizing Ruby on Rails, React.js, PostgreSQL, and associated technologies.
• Take ownership of application features and components, ensuring high standards of code quality, reliability, maintainability, and performance.
• Construct, maintain, and troubleshoot RESTful APIs and integrations with internal systems, third-party services, and governmental platforms.
• Collaborate with engineers, product managers, designers, stakeholders, and government partners to convert requirements and user needs into scalable technical solutions.
• Identify and resolve complex application issues, determine root causes, and implement sustainable enhancements.
• Develop and sustain application monitoring, dashboards, and alerts utilizing Datadog or similar observability platforms.
• Leverage AI-assisted development tools to enhance coding, debugging, testing, and overall development efficiency.
• Engage in code reviews, technical design discussions, architecture planning, and initiatives promoting engineering best practices.
• Assess technical strategies, identify trade-offs, and propose solutions that balance performance, scalability, maintainability, and program requirements.
• Stay informed about related technical systems, infrastructure, and dependencies.
• Generate and maintain technical documentation, including design specifications, architecture diagrams, implementation details, and research findings.
• Clearly communicate technical concepts, challenges, and recommendations.
• Mentor junior and mid-level engineers while supporting their professional growth.
• Contribute to initiatives focused on continuous improvement in software development processes, system reliability, and team effectiveness.
• Participate in technical interviews and engineering recruitment efforts as necessary.
• Lead smaller technical initiatives or workstreams when suitable.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field, accompanied by a minimum of 7 years of professional software engineering experience.
• Additional relevant professional experience may be considered in place of a degree.
• Strong hands-on expertise in developing and maintaining full-stack applications using Ruby on Rails, React.js, and PostgreSQL.
• Proven proficiency in at least one core engineering discipline, such as backend development, frontend development, or infrastructure engineering.
• Experience in designing, developing, integrating, and troubleshooting APIs, including third-party or government system integrations.
• Practical experience testing and debugging API requests and responses using tools like curl, Postman, or equivalent utilities.
• Experience in building and maintaining application dashboards, monitors, and alerts using Datadog or a similar observability platform.
• Understanding of monitoring strategies, alerting thresholds, application performance, and incident resolution.
• Familiarity with AI-assisted coding tools such as Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, GitHub Copilot, or similar solutions in professional development workflows.
• Experience with version control systems, code review standards, automated testing, and contemporary software development methodologies.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving abilities.
• Capability to effectively communicate technical concepts and collaborate with engineers, product teams, and both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Experience providing technical mentorship, guiding engineers, and contributing to engineering best practices.
• Must successfully complete and maintain the required federal Public Trust background investigation and meet all relevant agency-specific suitability criteria.
• Preferred: Experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS).
• Preferred: Previous involvement in supporting federal government programs or large-scale public-sector digital services.
• Preferred: Familiarity with Agile software development practices and multidisciplinary product teams.
