Senior FinOps Analyst

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Oversee cloud financial operations within a vast, multi-tenant AWS environment that includes both commercial and GovCloud accounts.

• Enhance cost transparency, accountability, and optimization throughout the organization.

• Convert cloud usage and expenditure data into actionable insights for engineering and business teams.

• Discover opportunities to lower costs while ensuring system performance, reliability, and availability are maintained.

• Provide comprehensive cloud cost reporting and forecasting to leadership, finance, and engineering teams.

• Monitor monthly actuals and analyze spending patterns.

• Manage chargeback and cost allocation processes.

• Create fiscal-year cost projections.

• Analyze AWS utilization data to pinpoint right-sizing opportunities across EC2, RDS, EBS, ELB, and container workloads.

• Develop prioritized right-sizing recommendations with quantified savings and collaborate with engineering owners for implementation and validation.

• Identify idle, orphaned, and over-provisioned resources and coordinate regular remediation efforts.

• Oversee Reserved Instance and Savings Plan strategy, including coverage analysis, purchase recommendations, utilization monitoring, and lifecycle management.

• Lower storage costs through S3 lifecycle policies, suitable EBS volume types, intelligent tiering, and snapshot management.

• Establish a continuous optimization process for everyday cloud operations.

• Create and maintain consolidated monthly cost reports that encompass AWS expenditure, usage trends, unit economics, and optimization opportunities.

• Design and manage chargeback and showback frameworks.

• Implement and enforce a cost-allocation tagging strategy and address untagged or incorrectly tagged resources.

• Develop executive dashboards and program-level scorecards utilizing AWS Cost and Usage Reports.

• Conduct root-cause analysis on cost anomalies and unexpected spending variances.

• Support cost governance and reporting in a multi-account AWS Organizations environment under consolidated billing.

• Develop fiscal-year cloud spending projections and monthly burn-rate analyses.

• Model cost implications of architectural changes, migrations, and onboarding new workloads.

• Monitor budget utilization, identify discrepancies, and recommend corrective measures.

• Assist in annual budgeting, quarterly reforecasts, and business-case development.

• Configure and manage AWS Budgets and Cost Anomaly Detection thresholds, including alerting, investigation, and response procedures.

• Engage in cloud architecture reviews and offer cost estimates and financial guidance.

• Ensure compliance with financial policies, cloud governance frameworks, and organizational cost controls, including FedRAMP-aligned account and billing boundaries.

• Collaborate with finance, IT, engineering, and program teams to align cloud financial strategies and establish shared accountability.

• Advance FinOps maturity through training, playbooks, standardized processes, and regular cost-management reviews.

• Automate recurring cost analysis, reporting, and tag hygiene tasks using Python or SQL.

⛳️ Requirements

• Must be a U.S. Citizen capable of obtaining and maintaining the required Public Trust level clearance.

• Bachelor’s degree with 8 years of experience; a Master’s degree with 6 years of experience; or a High School diploma/equivalent with 12 years of experience.

• At least 5 years of financial analysis experience, with a minimum of 3 years focused on cloud cost management on AWS.

• Proven track record in implementing resource right-sizing on a large scale, with documented cost outcomes.

• Demonstrated experience in producing consolidated cost reports, chargeback models, and fiscal year projections.

• Proven participation in cloud architectural reviews, providing cost estimates for proposed designs.

• High degree of attention to detail and accuracy in financial reporting and forecasting.

• FinOps Certified Practitioner or FinOps Certified Professional.

• AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, Solutions Architect Associate, or Cloud Financial Management specialty.

• Experience with third-party FinOps or cloud cost management platforms like Apptio Cloudability, CloudHealth, or Vantage.

• Experience working in a multi-account AWS Organizations environment with consolidated billing, including GovCloud.

• Experience consolidating bills across AWS, Azure, and GCP.

• Familiarity with Kubernetes and container cost allocation, including tools such as Kubecost or OpenCost.

• Experience supporting FedRAMP, FISMA, or DoD-accredited environments.
