This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom.
• Oversee a domain consisting of 6–10 teams with an approximate total of 60–90 engineers.
• Supervise the Engineering Managers who handle daily team leadership and report to the Director of Engineering.
• Mentor and nurture Engineering Managers and senior/lead engineers in technical decision-making, leadership skills, and career advancement.
• Organize and reorganize teams to fill skill or capacity gaps and mitigate key-person dependencies.
• Uphold a uniform standard for high-performing teams and address ongoing under-performance issues.
• Enhance hiring and retention capabilities by empowering Engineering Managers to recruit effectively and establishing career growth and mobility pathways.
• Serve as the primary escalation point for delivery and technical challenges across teams.
• Coordinate workstreams, delegate decisions with well-defined boundaries, and ensure follow-through on execution.
• Collaborate with Product and commercial stakeholders on metrics, project scope, trade-offs, and sustainable missions.
• Utilize team-topology principles to define team boundaries and interaction patterns.
• Maintain sufficient proximity to technical details to evaluate architecture and identify deviations without being hands-on.
• Safeguard software quality against deadline pressures.
• Propel operational maturity in testing, observability, and incident response.
• Develop evidence-based business cases for replatforming, team restructuring, and headcount investments.
• Represent the domain in discussions with engineering peers, Product, commercial stakeholders, and senior leadership.
• Link technical efforts to user and business outcomes.
• Proven experience in managing managers, such as Engineering Managers or comparable senior technical leads, within a similar multi-team domain.
• Strong technical foundation adequate for engaging in technical discussions, architectural assessments, and interventions across both legacy and modern systems.
• Evidence-driven leadership that utilizes delivery and quality metrics to inform decisions and foster buy-in.
• Capability to constructively challenge decisions at higher levels when supported by data.
• Authentic collaboration with Product and commercial stakeholders, demonstrating fluency in business and user outcomes.
• Ability to engage credibly as a peer to senior non-engineering stakeholders.
• Coaching focus that emphasizes delegation and accountability.
• Comfort in navigating ambiguity and the ability to provide clarity for teams.
• Experience in the public sector, health, housing, or regulated environments is a plus.
• Experience with team restructuring or organizational change is advantageous.
• Familiarity with legacy modernization alongside greenfield delivery is a benefit.
• Awareness of AI-assisted engineering practices is beneficial.
• Understanding of Developer Experience principles is a plus.
• Experience in environments where engineers manage production services is advantageous.
• Experience working with globally distributed teams is a plus.
