Senior Engineer – Nuclear Deterministic Safety Analysis, LOCA, Containment

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in North Carolina.

📋 Description

• Oversee projects related to Anticipated Operational Occurrences, Anticipated Transients without Scram, Reactor Heat Balance, and Thermal Hydraulic Fuel Channel Analyses.

• Act as a subject-matter expert on BWRX-300 LOCA and containment behavior.

• Design, sustain, and utilize deterministic safety analysis methods and outcomes.

• Conduct thermal-hydraulic evaluations for LOCA, HELB, containment response, PCCS and ICS performance, Fire Safe Shutdown, Annulus Pressurization Loads, and RIPD analyses.

• Create, document, and implement TRACG-based LOCA mass-and-energy release and fuel acceptance models.

• Develop GOTHIC-based containment response models for both conservative and best-estimate applications.

• Provide analyses and deliverables in line with customer needs, business processes, and regulatory standards.

• Innovate or enhance automation and analysis techniques.

• Draft technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, regulatory submissions, RAI responses, and technical justifications.

• Execute technical validation of engineering outputs.

• Communicate intricate technical challenges and propose solutions to internal and external clients, regulators, utility companies, and partners.

• Collaborate across various departments including mechanical design, core design, licensing, systems design, and civil/structural design teams.

• Ensure that LOCA and containment specifications are integrated into the evolving designs of the plant.

• Conduct work adhering to regulatory, customer, and quality assurance standards.

⛳️ Requirements

• B.S. Degree in an Engineering Discipline (Nuclear, Mechanical, Physics, or similar) with 8+ years of relevant nuclear experience, including at least 5+ years of demonstrated expertise in thermal-hydraulic safety analysis; OR M.S. Degree with 6+ years of relevant nuclear experience, including at least 3+ years in thermal-hydraulic safety analysis; OR Ph.D. with 4+ years of relevant nuclear experience, including at least 1+ year in thermal-hydraulic safety analysis.

• Direct experience with LOCA and/or containment analysis is highly preferred.

• Must possess legal authorization to work in the United States.

• Capability to obtain authorization for access to U.S. export-controlled information, if necessary.

• Familiarity with BWR core simulation and thermal-hydraulic system codes.

• Experience in BWR LOCA, containment, ICS/PCCS performance, HELB, Fire Safe Shutdown, Annulus Pressurization Loads, and RIPD analyses.

• In-depth knowledge of BWR systems and integrated plant responses.

• Understanding of nuclear physics, thermal hydraulics, and mechanical design as related to BWR.

• Proficiency in two-phase thermal-hydraulic analysis techniques.

• Awareness of reactor licensing requirements and deterministic safety analysis methodologies.

• Experience using TRACG, RELAP, and TRACE.

• Familiarity with GOTHIC, including multi-volume nodalization and passive heat removal modeling.

• Experience with Best Estimate methodology development and CSAU applications.

• Programming skills in languages such as C#, FORTRAN, or PYTHON.

• A Master's Degree or Ph.D. in Engineering, or Senior Reactor Operator Certification is preferred.
