Senior Electronics Engineer

Posted Aug 22

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in South Africa.

📋 Description

• Develop electronic designs for ball and player tagging products, spanning from initial architecture to full production.

• Create architecture for sealed, wirelessly rechargeable, battery-operated devices, encompassing power and energy budgets, charging systems, radio and antenna strategies, sensing capabilities, and data transmission.

• Break down product-level requirements into specific electronic requirements and document any assumptions made during the process.

• Oversee schematic design and PCB layout for high-performance, low-power embedded systems utilizing Altium.

• Direct efforts in inductive charging, radio integration, and electromagnetic compatibility.

• Establish the certification pathway during the concept phase.

• Implement antenna solutions on actual boards, fine-tune matching, and evaluate performance metrics.

• Assist with on-site design validation and bring-up processes.

• Test designs in laboratory settings and real-world environments with teams and athletes.

• Document actual performance against design intent and note any deviations.

• Record design intent, consider alternative solutions, and document any rejected options.

• Engage in design reviews and ensure findings are tracked to verified closure in released documentation.

• Design with manufacturability and testability in consideration from the outset.

• Generate fabrication and assembly documentation and aid in the transition to contract manufacturers.

• Maintain a BOM risk assessment that includes lifecycle status, lead times, and alternative sourcing for critical components.

• Provide effort estimates for each phase of engagement and operate under written approvals.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Electronic/Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.

• Minimum of 6 years of experience in electronics design for low-power, embedded MCU-based products.

• Experience personally guiding at least two products from concept to mass production.

• Demonstrated proficiency in schematic design and PCB layout using Altium.

• Experience with mixed-signal design in battery-powered products that are heavily constrained by space, weight, power, and cost.

• Strong skills in electronic debugging and analysis, with the discipline to differentiate between actual measurements and expected results.

• Experience in design-for-manufacture handoffs to contract manufacturers, including personally managing the fabrication and assembly documentation.

• Preferred: RF and microwave design expertise up to X-band, including UWB, GNSS, Bluetooth, or NFC.

• Preferred: Experience with antenna integration and matching on physical hardware.

• Preferred: Development of PCAs that withstand repeated high-acceleration impacts or similar shock and vibration conditions.

• Preferred: Host design experience with Nordic Semiconductor nRF52 / nRF53 / nRF54 series.

• Preferred: High-rate IMU selection, calibration, and data-offload architecture experience.

• Preferred: Familiarity with certification processes (CE, FCC, UKCA) and standards such as CISPR 11 / EN 55011, FCC Part 15, EN 300 328, EN 302 065.

• Preferred: Experience with rigid-flex, flex, or module and antenna-in-package integration.

• Preferred: Background in sports technology or rugged, real-world embedded applications.

🏝️ Benefits

• Opportunity for a permanent position if mutually beneficial.

• Engage in cutting-edge sports technology, working on products that transform the experiences of fans, players, and coaches.

• Tackle challenging, well-defined technical problems within a small team, with direct impact on engineering outcomes.

• Designs are tested and validated in collaboration with elite athletes and teams.

• Clear scope, established gates, and timely decision-making processes.
