Senior Electrical Cost Estimator – Data Center Construction

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Oversee the creation of precise electrical cost estimates for hyperscale data center initiatives, encompassing medium- and low-voltage distribution, substations, UPS systems, generators, switchgear, busway, grounding, and lighting systems.

• Conduct and supervise thorough electrical quantity takeoffs from plans, specifications, and BIM models, which include conduit, cabling, transformers, generators, and related infrastructure.

• Formulate, validate, and scrutinize labor, material, and equipment pricing models in line with project budgets, delivery strategies, and changing market conditions.

• Develop and sustain historical cost data, benchmarks, and estimating standards to aid large-scale programs and future project predictions.

• Review, evaluate, and standardize electrical contractor and subcontractor proposals, pinpointing scope deficiencies, cost risks, and commercial exposure.

• Lead and assist in value engineering and design optioneering efforts, assessing alternative electrical systems, layouts, and installation methods while upholding redundancy and reliability standards.

• Collaborate closely with engineering, procurement, and construction leaders to guide electrical system decisions influenced by cost, constructability, schedule, and risk.

• Recognize and actively manage risks associated with long-lead electrical equipment, supply chain limitations, labor availability, and market escalation.

• Consider regional cost differences across U.S. markets, including labor rates, logistics challenges, permitting considerations, and utility interface requirements.

• Assist in estimating for large-scale power infrastructure, including utility connections, substations, and campus-wide electrical distribution.

• Contribute to standardized data center designs and repeatable delivery models, enhancing cost certainty, scalability, and market speed.

• Ensure electrical estimates comply with relevant codes, safety standards, sustainability goals, and energy efficiency requirements.

• Create clear, well-supported estimating deliverables and present results to internal teams and external stakeholders.

• Engage in cost reviews, procurement conversations, funding approvals, and commercial strategy discussions.

• Aid in change management by evaluating electrical scope modifications and cost effects throughout the design and construction phases.

• Provide estimating handover materials to construction teams to ensure alignment between estimates and execution.

• Offer mentorship and technical support to junior estimators while contributing to estimating best practices.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.

• Over 7 years of experience in electrical estimating, with a strong preference for data center, mission-critical, or large-scale infrastructure projects.

• Advanced technical understanding of power distribution systems, backup generation, UPS systems, electrical codes, and labor productivity.

• Proven experience in estimating high-density and hyperscale electrical systems is highly desirable.

• Expertise in estimating and takeoff software such as Accubid, ConEst, McCormick, Bluebeam, or similar platforms, with a strong ability to interpret BIM-based data.

• Excellent analytical and communication skills, capable of clearly explaining cost drivers, assumptions, and risks.

• Demonstrated ability to work independently while providing leadership in a collaborative, multidisciplinary project environment.
