Senior Director, Semantic Data Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Define the technical vision, architecture, and multi-year roadmap for WEX's semantic data platform and the next generation of Data as a Service.

• Create semantic business objects that integrate enterprise data, business context, relationships, metrics, derived attributes, rules, lineage, quality, and governance.

• Develop a scalable methodology for producing semantic objects across WEX's various business divisions while upholding consistent enterprise standards.

• Spearhead the advancement of platform capabilities in semantic modeling, ontology, metadata, knowledge graphs, data quality, lineage, data contracts, and governance.

• Collaborate with business and product leaders to extract business insights from databases, applications, workflows, documents, spreadsheets, policies, and institutional knowledge.

• Empower AI and agentic applications to discover, comprehend, reason over, and act safely on trusted enterprise data.

• Construct reusable platform capabilities and developer experiences that enable teams to create data products and AI experiences more rapidly.

• Lead and cultivate a high-performing team of engineers, architects, and senior technical leaders.

• Work alongside Principal and Staff engineers to set architectural standards and address complex distributed data and platform challenges.

• Promote adoption across engineering and business teams, ensuring measurable customer and business outcomes.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 15 years of experience in software engineering, data engineering, distributed systems, data platforms, or related technology fields.

• Extensive experience in technical leadership.

• Proven track record of leading engineering organizations responsible for large-scale data, platform, infrastructure, or developer capabilities.

• In-depth knowledge of modern data architecture, including large-scale data processing, streaming, lakehouse architectures, data products, and distributed systems.

• Essential: profound understanding of semantic data technologies and industry trends.

• Direct experience in constructing a semantic data layer is highly recommended.

• Capability to translate intricate business concepts into scalable technical abstractions and reusable platform capabilities.

• Strong grasp of data quality, governance, lineage, security, privacy, and operational reliability.

• Experience in developing platforms that have been adopted by multiple engineering teams, business domains, or product organizations.

• Excellent architectural judgment and the ability to assess trade-offs.

• Ability to navigate between long-term strategic planning and detailed technical discussions.

• Skill in influencing senior technical, product, and business leaders across organizational boundaries.

• Experience in hiring, mentoring, and developing senior engineering talent and technical leaders.

• Strong communication skills for articulating complex technical concepts to engineering teams, business partners, and executive leadership.

• Preferred: experience in building platforms that support AI/ML, generative AI, RAG, or agentic applications.

• Preferred: background in knowledge representation, semantic search, context engineering, graph technologies, or AI-ready enterprise data.

• Preferred: experience in modernizing large enterprise data ecosystems across multiple business domains and legacy systems.

• Preferred: experience managing substantial platform transformation from concept through enterprise adoption.
