Senior Data Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +1 more state.

📋 Description

• Develop Teleport's internal data platform as the inaugural Data Engineer for the company.

• Design and manage a low-maintenance cloud data warehouse along with a transformation workflow.

• Assess managed connectors, source exports, and native cloud services prior to creating custom ingestion software.

• Structure CRM, contracts, finance, billing, product usage, and cloud infrastructure data into consistent business entities and metrics.

• Establish a canonical customer identity and mappings across accounts, tenants, billing entities, and source-specific identifiers.

• Collaborate with Finance, Revenue, Product, and Engineering teams to define ARR, adoption, infrastructure costs, and gross margins.

• Implement data quality checks, reconciliation, documentation, lineage, and observable failure behaviors.

• Safeguard customer and employee information through access controls, data minimization, redaction, and retention practices.

• Oversee warehouse performance and cost, ensuring the platform remains comprehensible and manageable by a small team.

• Utilize Python or Go for integrations that cannot be safely or economically handled by managed or warehouse-native capabilities.

• Work alongside Teleport engineers on a take-home Data Engineering Challenge via GitHub over a span of approximately two weeks.

⛳️ Requirements

• Openness to collaborating with Teleport's engineers on the Data Engineering Challenge.

• Proven experience in establishing a data engineering function from the ground up in a growing startup is highly preferred.

• Proficiency in SQL along with strong skills in dimensional or analytical data modeling.

• Ability to translate ambiguous stakeholder inquiries into well-documented, testable business definitions.

• Production-level experience with dbt or a comparable SQL transformation workflow.

• Familiarity with cloud data warehouses such as Redshift, Snowflake, or BigQuery.

• Experience with managed ELT, APIs, object storage, incremental loading, and evolving source schemas.

• Strong practices in data quality and reconciliation.

• Experience in handling sensitive data, access control, and retention in a responsible manner.

• Practical knowledge in Python or Go, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, and cloud operations.

• Good judgment in making build versus buy decisions, maintaining operational simplicity, and managing scope in a startup setting.

• Intellectual curiosity and a readiness to master new technologies.

• Comfort with shifting focus areas and working directly with stakeholders throughout the organization.

• Progressive, hands-on experience in Data Engineering is essential, though the specific amount is not indicated.

• Eligibility to work in the US.

• Willingness to travel to Oakland, CA for onboarding week and occasionally for team events.
