This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Michigan, +2 more states.
β’ Take full ownership of specific privacy verticals, managing projects from identifying issues to resolution with minimal guidance.
β’ Offer practical, business-focused legal counsel on privacy regulations relevant to U.S. healthcare entities, including HIPAA, state privacy laws, data breach notification laws, and other federal and state mandates.
β’ Provide advice to business, product, and engineering teams regarding laws, regulations, governance frameworks, and ethical practices related to artificial intelligence.
β’ Assist the internal commercial contracting team by reviewing privacy-related clauses in vendor agreements, data usage agreements, and business associate agreements that require escalation.
β’ Aid in the development and upkeep of privacy policies, procedures, and training resources.
β’ Collaborate with Compliance, Security, IT, and business teams to pinpoint privacy risks and implement risk-based solutions.
β’ Keep abreast of changes in privacy and AI legislation and convey their implications to relevant stakeholders.
β’ Support the handling of privacy incidents, regulatory inquiries, and audits.
β’ Utilize AI tools judiciously and efficiently in everyday legal tasks to enhance productivity, quality, and turnaround time.
β’ Report directly to the Privacy Officer and Associate General Counsel.
β’ Juris Doctor (J.D.) with an active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction and in good standing.
β’ At least 6 years of overall legal experience, including a minimum of 2 years at a law firm with significant privacy or healthcare regulatory focus.
β’ Required experience in advising healthcare organizations or clients on privacy, regulatory, or compliance issues.
β’ Proficient knowledge of HIPAA and other U.S. privacy laws applicable to healthcare organizations.
β’ Proven capability to work autonomously, manage competing priorities, and demonstrate sound judgment with limited oversight.
β’ A self-starter attitude and a readiness to take charge of projects and privacy verticals.
β’ Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate intricate legal concepts into straightforward, actionable guidance for non-lawyers.
β’ Comfort and enthusiasm in using AI tools, including generative AI and legal research and drafting assistants, in regular legal workflows.
β’ Interest in and willingness to advise on AI governance and legal issues related to AI intersecting with privacy.
β’ Strong collaboration skills and the ability to establish trust with stakeholders across legal, compliance, product, and business teams.
β’ Professional certifications such as CIPP, CIPM, or AIGP are preferred.
β’ Familiarity with the NIST Privacy Framework and/or NIST AI RMF is preferred.
β’ Previous in-house experience, particularly in healthcare or health tech, is preferred.
