Senior Counsel – IP, Product and Privacy

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada, +1 more country.

📋 Description

• Spearhead the safeguarding, commercialization, and legal adherence of Miovision’s product and intellectual property portfolio.

• Provide guidance on the processing of public traffic video data using computer vision and AI technologies, ensuring alignment with global privacy laws.

• Collaborate with the CTO organization to secure, protect, and monetize proprietary innovations.

• Oversee patent and trademark drafting and prosecution in conjunction with external legal counsel.

• Keep the company’s trade-secret register up to date.

• Manage the Open Source Software (OSS) Policy.

• Assess the patent portfolio to identify and unlock commercial potential.

• Implement enforcement strategies against competing entities that infringe on patents.

• Integrate legal, privacy, and regulatory best practices within the core product lifecycle.

• Operationalize privacy-by-design principles and data governance across the intersection of hardware and the Miovision One cloud platform.

• Offer counsel on AI, public traffic video capture, video obfuscation/blurring methods, and broader data governance risks and obligations.

• Ensure organization-wide compliance with operational, risk, and compliance frameworks.

• Maintain alignment across functions with the AI Governance Policy, Open Source Software Policy, Regulatory Framework, and Enterprise Risk Management Program.

• Develop and deliver specialized training for the CTO organization on IP protection, privacy compliance, and emerging legal trends.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 10 years of senior legal experience navigating intricate IP, AI, public video capture, and data privacy frameworks in leading private practice or rapidly growing tech environments.

• Experience with hardware, software, AI, or Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technologies is highly advantageous.

• Extensive background in patent capture, prosecution, trade secret management, and portfolio monetization or enforcement.

• Strong understanding of PIPEDA, CCPA, GDPR, and municipal public-sector data privacy regulations.

• Proven ability to efficiently manage external counsel to optimize budget and legal outcomes.

• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills that foster trust among engineering, product, and executive leadership teams.

• A proactive self-starter with high ethical standards and a decisive, results-oriented problem-solving approach.

• Possesses an undergraduate law degree from an accredited institution.

• Active member in good standing with any Canadian provincial or US state bar.

• Legally authorized to work in either Canada or the United States.
