This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.
• Oversee the complete design of controls for utility-scale solar, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and hybrid projects.
• Analyze project scopes to pinpoint specific requirements and any deviations from Terabase’s standard controls offerings.
• Program and commission SEL controllers utilizing AcSELerator.
• Create Codesys control logic following IEC 61131-3 structured text and continuous function charts.
• Document requirements, develop logic, conduct tests in simulated or lab settings, and record test results.
• Execute and validate closed-loop Active Power, Reactive Power, Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR), and Primary Frequency Response (PFR) algorithms.
• Manage code artifacts in Bitbucket in compliance with version-control protocols.
• Diagnose complex SCADA and controls issues using Wireshark, breakpoints, cross-reference, and watch-list tools.
• Generate system architecture diagrams, control narratives, logic diagrams, commissioning documents, and operator manuals.
• Collaborate with Product Engineering on product feature development and resolving bugs.
• Evaluate documentation prepared by junior controls engineers.
• Lead Continuous Improvement initiatives and Lessons Learned sessions, integrating field feedback into product standards and templates.
• Mentor junior engineers in preparation for Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and customer presentations.
• Act as the primary technical contact for EPCs, asset owners, and grid operators regarding controls.
• Conduct FATs and relay technical information to audiences without technical backgrounds.
• Identify technical risks and scheduling pressures for project management, along with suggested solutions.
• Maintain daily Jira tickets and uphold Jira best practices.
• Willingness to travel up to 10% for on-site commissioning, FAT, and customer interactions.
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering, Control Systems, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
• More than 5 years of experience in IEC 61131-3/PLC programming, ideally within the Codesys or AcSELerator environments.
• At least 3 years of experience in controls for utility-scale renewable power plants (solar, BESS, or hybrid), including project-specific development, Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), commissioning, and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT).
• Proficient in IEC 61131-3 programming using AcSELerator and Codesys, including Diagram Builder, traces, breakpoints, and watch lists.
• Comprehensive understanding of Modbus-TCP, DNP3, OPC-UA, C37.118, and other relevant industrial protocols.
• In-depth knowledge of PFR, AVR, and closed-loop control for Active/Reactive power, as well as capacitor bank functionality.
• Familiarity with Utility/ISO testing and interconnection standards, including ERCOT, PJM, BPA, IEEE 2800, and NERC.
• Experience with the design, configuration, and commissioning of Power Plant Controllers (PPC).
• Knowledge of PSCAD, PSSE, and/or TSAT modeling processes.
• Experience with hardware-in-the-loop systems such as RTDS, OPAL-RT, Speedgoat, or Typhoon.
