Senior Controls Engineer – Advanced Manufacturing

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom.

📋 Description

• Collaborate with various cross-functional teams including operations, product engineering, maintenance, quality, procurement, IT, OT, EHS, and business leadership.

• Design, implement, secure, and maintain control systems throughout the global supply chain.

• Create control architectures, direct technical decisions, establish standards, and ensure automation systems are safe, maintainable, scalable, and production-ready.

• Oversee and assist in the architecture, design, programming, integration, commissioning, and optimization of control systems.

• Formulate control concepts and specifications, lead technical evaluations, support capital project implementation, resolve intricate system challenges, and standardize effective solutions.

• Manage control projects from initial concept and architecture through to production launch.

• Develop programming standards and preferred methodologies.

• Program, assess, and troubleshoot PLC, HMI, motion, safety, and industrial communication applications.

• Lead control design assessments and ensure compliance with technical, safety, maintainability, and cybersecurity standards.

• Create capital estimates, define control scopes, formulate test plans, and establish technical requirements for RFQs.

• Direct or assist with vendor selection, panel and software evaluations, FAT, SAT, commissioning, and startup processes.

• Diagnose complex issues related to controls, networks, motion, robotics interfaces, and manufacturing data.

• Enhance systems for reliability, cycle time, diagnostics, maintainability, and production efficiency.

• Identify and replicate effective control solutions across manufacturing sites.

• Support the automation roadmap, governance, and technology strategy.

• Assess emerging technologies in controls, connectivity, simulation, and AI-enabled manufacturing.

• Mentor site controls personnel and provide senior technical guidance.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Controls, Automation, Mechatronics, Computer Engineering, or a related field.

• Over 7 years of experience in industrial controls, automation, systems integration, or advanced manufacturing.

• Proven leadership in significant controls and capital automation projects.

• Advanced experience in PLC and HMI programming with a solid understanding of structured software development practices.

• Strong grasp of machine safety, motion control, robotics integration, industrial networking, instrumentation, and manufacturing processes.

• Experience in developing control architectures, functional specifications, standards, test plans, and commissioning documentation.

• Skills in project leadership, technical mentoring, structured troubleshooting, and teamwork across functions.

• Willingness to travel as necessary to support enterprise manufacturing sites.

• Proficiency with Rockwell Automation ControlLogix/CompactLogix, Studio 5000, FactoryTalk, or equivalent platforms.

• Familiarity with Siemens TIA Portal, S7 PLCs, WinCC, or other major industrial controls platforms.

• Knowledge of industrial networks including EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, Modbus TCP, OPC UA, and managed switching.

• Experience with machine safety PLCs, safety relays, risk-reduction functions, and validation support.

• Understanding of servo systems, variable-frequency drives, coordinated motion, and precision process control.

• Familiarity with industrial robots, machine vision, automated material handling, and equipment integration.

• Experience with MES, SCADA, historians, OEE, databases, and manufacturing data collection systems.

• Knowledge of FAT, SAT, commissioning, production launch, and lifecycle support.

• Certification in Lean, Six Sigma, functional safety, networking, or controls platforms.
