Senior Controls Engineer – Advanced Manufacturing

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom.

📋 Description

• Oversee controls projects from initial concept and architecture to production launch.

• Create controls architectures, functional specifications, programming standards, and preferred solutions.

• Program, evaluate, and troubleshoot PLC, HMI, motion, safety, and industrial communication applications.

• Facilitate controls design reviews and ensure adherence to technical, safety, maintainability, and cybersecurity standards.

• Develop capital estimates, controls scopes, test plans, and technical specifications for RFQs.

• Lead or assist in vendor selection, panel and software assessments, FAT, SAT, commissioning, and startup.

• Diagnose intricate controls, network, motion, robotics interfaces, and manufacturing data challenges.

• Enhance existing systems for reliability, cycle time, diagnostics, maintainability, and production efficiency.

• Identify and replicate successful controls solutions across various manufacturing sites.

• Support the Automation & Advanced Manufacturing roadmap, governance, and technology strategy.

• Assess emerging controls, connectivity, simulation, and AI-driven manufacturing technologies.

• Mentor site controls teams and provide senior technical guidance during project execution and issue resolution.

• Collaborate with operations, product engineering, maintenance, quality, procurement, IT, OT, EHS, business leadership, manufacturing sites, suppliers, OEMs, and system integrators.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Controls, Automation, Mechatronics, Computer Engineering, or a related field.

• Over 7 years of experience in industrial controls, automation, systems integration, or advanced manufacturing.

• Proven leadership in managing significant controls and capital automation projects.

• Advanced experience in PLC and HMI programming with a solid understanding of structured software development methodologies.

• Strong comprehension of machine safety, motion control, robotics integration, industrial networking, instrumentation, and manufacturing processes.

• Experience in developing controls architectures, functional specifications, standards, test plans, and commissioning documentation.

• Skills in project leadership, technical mentoring, structured troubleshooting, and cross-functional collaboration.

• Willingness to travel as needed to support enterprise manufacturing locations.

• Familiarity with Rockwell Automation ControlLogix/CompactLogix, Studio 5000, FactoryTalk, Siemens TIA Portal, S7 PLCs, WinCC, or equivalent platforms.

• Proficient in EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, Modbus TCP, OPC UA, and managed switching.

• Knowledge of machine safety PLCs, safety relays, risk-reduction functions, and validation support.

• Experience with servo systems, variable-frequency drives, coordinated motion, and precision process control.

• Background in industrial robots, machine vision, automated material handling, and equipment integration.

• Familiarity with MES, SCADA, historians, OEE, databases, and manufacturing data collection systems.

• Experience with FAT, SAT, commissioning, production launch, and lifecycle support.

• Preferred certifications in Lean, Six Sigma, functional safety, networking, or controls platforms.
