Senior Coding Implementation Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Virginia.

📋 Description

• Collaborate in the deployment of Commence's medical coding platform alongside clients.

• Act as the primary technical lead for customer implementations, overseeing processes from data discovery to side-by-side validation, go-live, and stabilization.

• Guide the source-to-target data mapping and interface definitions with the customer’s IT and revenue cycle teams.

• Make informed decisions regarding the project scope, sequencing, and customer responsibilities.

• Design and set up coding logic tailored for complex clients and payer-specific regulations.

• Establish a side-by-side validation methodology that encompasses sampling, discrepancy taxonomy, acceptance thresholds, and evidence of production readiness.

• Identify root causes of accuracy failures across source data, ingestion processes, mapping, rule application, and model behavior.

• Ensure accountability from partner engineering for resolutions using reproducible cases.

• Develop and sustain the internal knowledge base, runbooks, configuration patterns, validation tools, and onboarding materials.

• Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior Implementation Consultants.

• Write SQL queries, work within AWS, manage configurations in Git, and implement bounded changes to Java rule and integration components.

• Represent Commence in discussions with customer executives regarding implementation progress, accuracy results, and risk management.

• Offer insights on implementation feasibility and level-of-effort for new customer initiatives.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 6 years of experience implementing healthcare software in provider organizations.

• At least two full-cycle implementations managed end-to-end as the primary technical resource.

• Comprehensive understanding of medical coding with hands-on surgical and procedural coding experience.

• Proficient knowledge of CPT, ICD-10-CM and PCS, modifier applications, NCCI edits, global periods, and operative note documentation.

• Advanced SQL skills, including performance-optimized queries against large datasets.

• Capability to design reconciliation and validation queries.

• Practical AWS experience, including S3, RDS, EC2, CloudWatch, and IAM.

• Familiarity with environment segregation and PHI handling protocols.

• Ownership of Git-based workflows, including branching strategies, pull request practices, and review of configuration modifications.

• Proficient in reading Java, tracing behaviors through existing rules and integration components, and making bounded changes under Engineering review.

• Proven ability in pattern recognition at scale and quantifying impact.

• Strong attention to detail, particularly where accuracy has financial, clinical, or compliance implications.

• Credibility in holding discussions with engineering and customer executives.

• Ability to manage customer relationships proactively without escalation as a default approach.

• A Bachelor’s degree, or four additional years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree.

• Desired credentials include AAPC or AHIMA certifications such as CPC, COC, CCS, or CIRCC, particularly with surgical specialty experience.

• Experience with Epic or Cerner platforms is desirable.

• Familiarity with HL7 v2, FHIR, and X12 837 and 835 is preferred.

• Experience with computer-assisted coding, autonomous coding, or NLP-based clinical documentation platforms is a plus.

• Experience in executing parallel runs or side-by-side validations is beneficial.

• Proficiency in Python for data analysis and validation scripting is preferred.

• Experience in ambulatory surgery centers or multi-specialty surgical groups is a plus.

• Previous involvement in implementations in conjunction with a third-party software vendor is desirable.
