Senior Backend Engineer, Data

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Portugal.

📋 Description

• Design and develop distributed backend services and APIs.

• Establish patterns for scalability, resilience, caching, queuing, and inter-service communication.

• Create, construct, and enhance data pipelines.

• Guarantee structured transformation, data quality, schema enforcement, and lineage tracking.

• Provide marketing performance data consistently at scale.

• Write production-ready code, oversee code reviews, and guide fellow engineers.

• Contribute to internal libraries, platform SDKs, and backend frameworks.

• Develop and sustain deployment pipelines and infrastructure-as-code environments.

• Integrate external APIs and internal microservices.

• Implement secure authentication, authorization, and access controls.

• Adopt observability practices and optimize latency, throughput, and cost efficiency.

• Engage in automated and load testing as well as resiliency practices.

• Collaborate with SRE to define and achieve service-level objectives.

• Work alongside product, data science, and SRE teams on architectural decisions.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of five years of backend engineering experience with architectural ownership of production services or distributed systems.

• Strong background in Python engineering.

• Practical experience in building and managing REST APIs and backend services.

• Understanding of microservices, concurrency, asynchronous programming, and event-driven architectures.

• Production experience with AWS, including serverless and managed services.

• Production experience with Spark and Lakehouse platforms, including medallion architecture (Bronze/Silver/Gold).

• Ability to analyze Spark execution plans, shuffle behavior, and streaming semantics.

• Experience in building or integrating with LLM-based or agentic systems.

• Proficiency in containerization, orchestration, and infrastructure-as-code.

• Strong experience with CI/CD processes.

• Knowledge of observability practices, including logs, metrics, traces, and performance analysis.

• Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.

• Familiarity with streaming or queuing systems is an advantage.

• Experience with Lakehouse governance and optimization tools is an advantage.

• Experience with API gateway architectures, caching layers, or service meshes is an advantage.

• Full-stack engineering with product experience is an advantage.
